Reviews

War Made Easy exposes a 50 year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the US into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn the film exhumes remarkable archive footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations. War Made East gives special attention to the parallels between the Vietnam war and the war in Iraq. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon s meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents disturbing examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare footage of political leaders and leading journalists from the past including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Defence Secretary Robert McNamara, dissident Senator Wayne Morse and news correspondents Walter Cronkite and Morley Safer.

I would highly recommend this piece. The lies and manipulations of the people by our governments is already widely documented and known. The reasons we are told we have gone to war we know are popular fallacies to coax us into gentle acceptance to actions we know will kill and maim fellow human beings. What this documentary does is cleverly edit the words of of our beloved leaders so that we see the changing arguments they employ to manipulate the public into subservience and the diabolical state of the "free" media. What this documentary does is show that what we have recently see come to pass in Iraq is a play book which has been repeated used thorugh successive generations of war.

Watch our leaders lie (and smile while they do it).

Powerful, if slightly familiar examination of how the US government lies to its population to justify going into war, and how the media happily goes along. Interesting to see the how Presidents Bush, Johnson, Reagan, and even Clinton used such similar language and techniques to manipulate public opinion, and how the media generally never does ask the hard questions. It does get a bit repetitive, and it's not like we didn't know some of this on the big picture level already. None the less, these kind of examinations of our recent history are always worthwhile, entertaining (in a disturbing, darkly funny sort of way), important and thought-provoking.

I never stop wondering about how easy it is too fool people with one of the most powerful weapons; the media.
