Synopsis

Tim Roth's directorial debut, based on the novel by Alexander Stuart (who adapted the screenplay), is not for the faint of heart. When a seemingly normal family moves from London to rural Devon, 15-year-old Tom (Freddie Cunliffe) stumbles into a shocking secret concerning his father (Ray Winstone) and 17-year-old sister, Jessie (Lara Belmont). Afraid of breaking up the family and upsetting his mother (Tilda Swinton), who has just given birth to a baby girl, he crawls into a shell and remains there, confused and alienated. Eventually, the situation boils over, and the truth is exposed. Roth shows that he has the ability to draw extremely emotional performances from Winstone and Swinton, as well as from newcomers Belmont and Cunliffe, who provide the film with its true heart. THE WAR ZONE is a brilliantly harsh and tragic family drama.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bleak, as expected, 19 Aug 2008
By Colin C "Colin C" (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Tim Roth's debut film as director is a claustrophobic family drama with an excellent cast and is memorably filmed around locations in Devon.

I came to this film knowing that the content of the plot (centering around a father abusing his teenage daughter) would mean it was likely to be a harrowing watch, and I was not wrong in that assumption. Ray Winstone and Tilda Swinton make a convincing if strange married couple, and the two young actors playing their children are revelations in their roles. The film is photographed brilliantly and scenes shot on the rugged coastline are excellent contrasts to the dark interiors. Ultimately, I am not sure whether anyone would come away from this film feeling uplifted in any way, but it does contain moments of raw drama which are worth seeing.

The transfer/picture is sharp and the extras include illuminating interviews on the casting and filming process from the actors.

Mildly recommended, but only if you can handle depressing films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very upsetting but impressive movie!, 18 Jun 2009

The War zone funnily enough was filmed not far away from where I live in Devon. The story involves a family, who locate from London to Devon. The film itself is see through the sons eyes,Tom.He spies on his sister and suspects his dad of sexual abuse towards his sibling.

The movie is very compelling and has alot of replay value. There will be people who will see it and blacklist it but the film is very true to life, forcing you to see it as in the here and now.Without spoiling anything the movie is shocking on a couple of scenes.Watch but only if you are strong minded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw drama that will stay with you for a long time, 14 May 2009
By Flmfn (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This intense family drama got dark and horrifying to the point where it was almost too hard for me to keep watching. Yet at the same time it was so compelling I watched it all the way through and kept thinking about it for days afterwards. This film definitely will not leave you feeling even slightly uplifted, but it will stay with you for a long time because of it's intense emotion and strange dark beauty.

Great acting as expected from the two leads, but the two young actors playing the brother and sister really blew me away. I'm sure it took a lot of courage (not to mention great direction from Tim Roth) for them to act this drama out in such a raw and intense way.

For lovers of dark, realistic arthouse-style drama. Definitely not for the fainthearted (as it contains graphic scenes of sexual abuse and violence).
