I was originally after a digitally re-mastered version of this classic album but what I have ended up with here is actually a re-mixed version, which has tweaked and tampered with the original master, ill-advisedly in my opinion. The result is a 'poppier', softer, more diluted sound, perhaps re-mixed for a more modern feel. Whatever, I don't really like it. The original was perfect so there was nothing to do save to enhance the various strings, synths and guitars with a digital remastering, however, it feels like a formulaic 30 minute TV makeover has been applied here and WoTW is poorer for it.

Newcomers to this fantastic musical rendition of HG Well's novel will not know any better and will probably love this 30th Anniversary version. Those who know the original well should stick with the basic CD version.

If anyone still hasn't sat down and listen to this rendition of Jeff Wayne's verion of the HG Wells classic at anytime...then I recommend you find time to do so.
When this splendid piece of work first appeared in LP form I played it over and over and after all these years I've yet to tire of it...
Now out in CD and in many variations for all to buy...
Like many peices of work...by listening over and over I find that I pick up a sound or sounds that I hadn't heard before...a little bit of add-ons seem to be happening and this work is really a masterpiece...a classic in its own right...many people have said that time is overdue for another piece of work from Jeff Wayne, but WHY?
War of the Worlds is timeless...it was in bookform...it is in this work...and variants in movies are also in their own right...
If War of the Worlds proves to be Jeff Waynes only high profile work - I won't worry, I'll still be listening to it for as long as I can...

I have always loved this album and to eventually own the celebration recording is absolute heaven! David Essex and Phil Lynott are just perfect as is Richard Burton. The orchestrations create such vivid imaginative pictures it's so superior to the recent Tom Cruise film - Justin Haywood's track is so melodic and the Julie Covington/Phil Lynott duet is so emotional too - but it - its just a must!
