This is a valuable book. It describes the experiences of South Africans during WW2. I was surprised how many fought in the Mediterranean. It consists of the author's narrative interspersed with first hand accounts. What is remarkable is the matter of fact air with which these volunteers dealt with ever present sudden death. They were young and keener on adventure than preserving their lives.
This is a first rate read and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know how things really were and to appreciate the human spirit at its best.
