War Room follows Bill Belichick and two of his former staffers running the football operations of three NFL clubs: the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons.

Belichick and his staff developed and refined a scouting (recruitment) system while working for the Cleveland Browns in the early 90s. After Belichick was fired many of those staffers moved around the league, a few stopping at the New York Jets, before Belichick was hired as the head coach of the Patriots, and hired many of the Browns' staff to work with him again.

The Patriots went on to make 5 Super Bowls over the next 12 years, winning three, and winning their division 10 times. While some of that success comes from coaching, most success in sports comes from the players. The Patriots scouting system, which feeds into college and free agent recruitment, along with their salary cap management is the cornerstone of that consistent on-field success.

Holley's book details that system, and the seasons 2001-2011 - which is enjoyable if you're a Patriots fan. It also follows Scott Pioli, the long-time Patriots head of personnel, after he moves to the Chiefs as General Manager, and Thomas Dimitroff in his role as General Manager at the Falcons.

Holley gets a significant amount of access and openness from players, staff and the principals.

A very enjoyable read if you're into the NFL.

In the seventies and eighties, Liverpool had a period of great success under Bill Shankly and his protégés. The famous “boot room” mentality saw successive Liverpool managers evolve and adopt the principles laid down under Shankly. Across the Atlantic, in a different form of football, a similar thing is happening. Bill Belichick’s stunning success with the New England Patriots and his method of leadership had been adopted by some of his protégés. However, unlike the Liverpool parallel, Belichick’s apprentices have gone elsewhere, Scott Pioli to the Kansas City Chiefs and Thomas Dimitroff to the Atlanta Falcons.
Holley’s explanation of Belichick’s management, leadership and approach to the draft, and how Pioli and Dimitroff have applied it in their own organisations, makes this something of an NFL version of Moneyball. The concept might be slightly flawed or overstated – Pioli was sacked by the Chiefs soon after publication – but this is still an immensely readable, great insight to the modern-day NFL.

Excellent behind the scenes look at a very successful set of executives. Although though no magic formulas (save for hard work!) - it does lift the lid on how each individual have progressed through their careers. Good read and a must for any Moneyball or Feinstein fan.

Excellent insight into the workings of NFL football clubs. An insiders view on the recruitment, coaching and playing side along with the office politics outsiders rarely get to know about. Fascinating.

Great book and a great insight into how a lot of things happened the way they did. Must-read if you're a Pats fan and an interesting read if you're just an NFL fan.
