Reviews

This deluxe boxed set contains the entire epic story of WAR AND REMEMBRANCE all fourteen parts, 26 hours on 12 discs plus a bonus audio CD of the War and Remembrance soundtrack music. The special features Include interviews and commentary with actors and production personnel, War and Remembrance A Living History featurette, documentaries The Making of War and Remembrance and War and Remembrance Behind the Scenes , and The Music of War and Remembrance featurette. "War and Remembrance" is the sequel to the mini-series, "The Winds of War". Both mini-series were based on the novels of the same name by Herman Wouk. "War and Remembrance" follows the stories of the extended Henry family. The costumes, scenery and overall visual appeal of the mini-series is stunning, especially when compared to the earlier series. ABC spent $130 million in 1988 on "War and Remembrance" and it shows in the production quality of the mini-series.

Great series, great box set, at last available in UK. The dvd's are actually region free, which includes of course region 2 UK.
I love Herman Wouk's wonderful novel, this tv mini-series brings it to the screen paying great respect to the book, it follows the trials and tribulations of the Henry family and the Jastrow family starting on December 15, 1941 and ending on August 7, 1945.
So pleased to have this, watched it several times and it gets better with every viewing.

Excellent purchase, was bought as a present for my father, he was thrilled with it. Found this item impossible to get before in the british boxed format. Will use this seller again when I need a DVD that is no longer in circulation.

Been waiting to get this in a region 2 compatible format for years ever since I got "The Winds of War". They don't make series like this now.

Some of the cast changes jar a bit between Winds of War and this but you quickly get used to it. Robert Mitchum was starting to show his age by the time this was made but I enjoyed the whole show to be enjoyable.

There are very few series on this scale. Great cast and epic scale and casting.

Item arrived safely but it had region 1 on the box. After contacting the seller I was told that this item was definitely Region 2 compatible, which it appeared to be after trying it . If a note to tis effect had been put with the order it would have saved me having to contact the seller and panicking as this was a Christmas present. Apart from that all is okay..

After many years waiting for the sequel to The Winds of War the wait was finally over and at a reduced price as well.
Thirteen discs in the box set make each disc about £5.70. I last saw it when it was first televised and I forgot how good it was.
By the standards of the 1980s it pulls no punches especially with regard to the death camp scenes and if it was re-made this version could probably not be bettered save for a few CGI effects. As stated previously, a few of the previous cast from The Winds of War had been replaced and it was good to see Robert Hardy once again reprising the role of Winston Churchill. Both the picture and sound quality were perfectly adequate.
I suppose the price may drop further in the future but go for it now, you won't be disappointed!

“War and Remembrance” is a monumental piece of filmmaking that takes the viewer through the second world war as experienced by members of a single American extended family, who seem to be at the right place at the right time (or at the wrong place at the wrong time) as history-shaping events are unfolding (the fall of Singapore, the battle of Midway, the Holocaust, the defense of Stalingrad, to name a few). The story is also shown from the German side (the Normandy invasion, the July plot to assassinate Hitler, the running of the concentration/extermination camps). It is more than a documentary, containing much joy and tragedy, loyalty and deceit at the personal level, sometimes giving it an almost soap-opera quality, if not for the historic background. Dan Curtis, the director, certainly pulled no punches in depicting the horrors of the Holocaust, to the extent that I was surprise that this as ever shown on television. My one complaint is that the DVDs were poorly packed, to the extent that one DVD actually split as I try to pry it from its holder. Physically ruining one of the DVDs was obviously infuriating and detracted greatly from the “experience”. Rating: 6 stars on content (out of five), plus -2 stars for packaging. Also, the IMDB gives the total running time as 27 hours, although this version is just over 23 hours long (including an estimated running time for the broken DVD), implying that some cutting/censoring may have been done. On the other hand, some of the scenes remaining were still raw enough earn an NC-17 (MPAA) / 18 (BBFC) rating.

I know it was expensive for a series dating back to the eighties but it was worth every penny. The cast excellent ,the effects on a minimum budget way ahead of their time.
