Book Description

1 Oct 1999 Classic Fiction
One of the world's greatest novels, most people are intimidated by the length of the original novel, yet this audiobook recording makes it accessible to even the laziest reader. A huge, panoramic account of Russia at the time of Napoleon's invasion in 1812 and the lives of three aristocratic families who include the memorable Prince Andrei, Pierre and Natasha. This important novel covers all the big themes - love tragedy and, of course, war and peace. The abridgement has been sensitively and expertly handled so as to retain the majesty and power of the original.

More About the Author

Count Leo Tolstoy was born in 1828 on the family estate of Yasnaya Polyana, in the Tula province, where he spent most of his early years, together with his several brothers. In 1844 he entered the University of Kazan to read Oriental Languages and later Law, but left before completing a degree. He spent the following years in a round of drinking, gambling and womanizing, until weary of his idle existence he joined an artillery regiment in the Caucasus in 1851.

He took part in the Crimean war and after the defence of Sevastopol wrote The Sevastopol Sketches (1855-6), which established his literary reputation. After leaving the army in 1856 Tolstoy spent some time mixing with the literati in St Petersburg before travelling abroad and then settling at Yasnaya Polyana, where he involved himself in the running of peasant schools and the emancipation of the serfs. His marriage to Sofya Andreyevna Behrs in 1862 marked the beginning of a period of contentment centred around family life; they had thirteen children. Tolstoy managed his vast estates, continued his educational projects, cared for his peasants and wrote both his great novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877).

During the 1870s he underwent a spiritual crisis, the moral and religious ideas that had always dogged him coming to the fore. A Confession (1879-82) marked an outward change in his life and works; he became an extreme rationalist and moralist, and in a series of pamphlets written after 1880 he rejected church and state, indicted the demands of flesh, and denounced private property. His teachings earned him numerous followers in Russia and abroad, and also led finally to his excommunication by the Russian Holy Synod in 1901. In 1910 at the age of eighty-two he fled from home 'leaving this worldly life in order to live out my last days in peace and solitude'; dying some days later at the station master's house at Astapovo.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bought and deleted it 29 May 2011

I bought this expecting to find an interactive table of contents (bought it via my Kindle, not from my pc screen). This is a massive book and it needs a table of chapters.

So I deleted this and bought a different version. If you go to the other version on Amazon, the one that is illustrated with the free link, you will pay the same price and have the interactive table. Read my review though. The free audio link took me to a completely different book.

This is a beautifully written and translated book. Tolstoy knows how to tell a grand story weavng different characters and events together with the mastery of a quilter. The description of Pierre getting ready for his wedding is one of the most moving and funny in literature. This is a book that people often lie about having read so as not to appear uneducated and people who have are branded'egg heads' People should read it for pure pleasure and nothing else. I read it over 30 years ago while waiting for my first child to arrive and finished it the day after she was born.

1.0 out of 5 stars truly terrible 18 July 2013

I thought the price was too good to be true, and I was right. Horribly abridged. Utter waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disapponting 31 May 2011
By Joy
Format:Kindle Edition
This states that it is `Optimised for your Kindle' but it did not seem as if this was so. No matter which size font I used the lines were fragmented, i.e. a full line was followed by one or two words on the next line, which made for uncomfortable reading. It was better in landscape mode, but there were still occasional single words on a line and I don't find it so convenient to read in this mode for a long time. The PC version is better, though not perfect. There is no contents list and the chapters were not separated. The chapter headings and text mostly followed on from the previous text, on the same line. This meant that you could not use the 5 way control to go back to the beginning of a chapter if you wanted to check something earlier in the book, and you could not access a chapter from the 'Go To' in the menu. And, although the location numbers appeared on my PC version, they did not show on the Kindle. Wish I'd read the other review first! All in all - very disappointing.
