Full of emotive imagery, this outstanding opus from a fine children's novelist is to be reccomended. The story delves deep into the consciousness of the two boys, one an English boy adapting to the often destrucive member of his new family, the other a Vietnamese orphan suffering severe emotional trauma through his experiences in his war-torn birth-land. Disturbing at times, this is essential reading for young teenagers who wish to develop a deeper understanding of suffering and adjustment.

I found this book was at the beginning quite difficult to get into, but as I read more of it i began to understand it better. It was an emotional book that certainly made me feel sad but also good. It made me see how war can effect children.
