Biography

Biography by Richie Unterberger & Sean Westergaard
In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. ... An early posthumous release, given a legally-dubious CD release a few years back, but fairly easy to find on vinyl in the secondhand stores.
Some of the material has appeared elsewhere - on First Rays Of The New Rising Sun and South Saturn Delta. Also "Highway Child" is just a slightly different mix of the single (in mono). But...
a) "Stepping Stone" and "Izabella" are alternate takes from the session for the Band Of Gypsys lost single. (The master takes are on First Rays... and Voodoo Child)
b) "Peter Gunn Catasrophe" is a strange and v. amusing fragment of studio jamming, at the end of which Hendrix ad libs a few lines to the tune of "Jealousy"
c) "Three Little Bears" is a bootleg perennial (often with the instruments mixed down to near-inaudibility: it sounds normal here). Jimi admits on mic that the possibly ad libbed lyrics are just "too silly!", but like the previous track, a v. amusing glimpse of the maestro having fun in the studio.

Format: Audio CD
From memory, this was the fourth posthumous Hendrix LP release after Isle of Wight, Cry of Love, In the West and Rainbow Bridge. At the time (1973) this album was disappointing, but welcome in terms of the new material.

However, much of the album is just Jimi mucking around: good to hear, but not up to the standard of his classic material. The cod-reggae tune 'Three Little Bears' and 'Peter Gunn/Catastrophe' illustrate his sense of humour, while Mitch's 'Beginnings' and Hanson and Carlson's 'Tax Free' (both instrumentals) are worth a few listens.

An uncensored and extended version of Three Little Bears can be found on various bootlegs and the semi-official Axis Out-Takes, and it's clear from that version that Jimi regards it as a joke.

The instrumental 'Midnight' is the exception, an excellent performance with some spectacular guitar. The album also features 'Stepping Stone' and 'Highway Chile' which were both released in Jimi's lifetime.

The CD is not part of the Estate release series so it may be hard to come by. However, most of the tracks are available on various releases such as the box set and South Saturn Delta. Peter Gunn and Three Little Bears are not available anywhere else.

Worth seeking out if you can find it.

Thanks for arranging it. I take it the album is still deleted from the Polydor catalogue? Good album, obviously, because it's Hendrix but I actually thought there was a track (song) called War Heroes. I swear I heard that song before but maybe I was dreaming ... oh, well ... also: the cover photo was one of the best t-shirts from the '70s!
