I bought it from the author on Sunday, and have read and enjoyed it since then. It led me to research the true story of Wojtek online, and that is a recommendation in itself. As a retired librarian I encourage adults to read children's books - they are often the best! As for children reading about war, this is a very good example of how it can be told faithfully but without too much of the trauma to alarm them.

Initially got it for my boys. They loved it. Then decided to invest myself. Sad old story about war, true friendship, good and evil put on paper again. Lovely and involving. Proper book, real literature. Enjoyed.

This is a great story. I recommend it for adults as well as children. Wojtek the bear springs to life, but that's because the author Jenny Robertson has such knowledge of her subject. Her writing has been described by George Mackay Brown as springing from a deep well of compassion, and that statement is true of this book too. The book is not just about the bear but also about the way Stalin treated the Poles until 1941, and the author brings the soldiers to life as well. The story has relevance for today. Wojtek deserves to be remembered in each generation.
