Review

‘Neverness streaked across the firmament as one of the great romantic epics of modern sf… in The Broken God Zindell’s combination of adventure, metaphysics, and intellectual debate works marvellously, leaving you ready for more.’
Locus

‘The ideas are hard sf with philosophical undertones, and the story is compelling. Zindell makes you think’

Product Description

RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON

Danlo wi Soli Ringess has returned from the Vild, the first lightship pilot to escape that hellish region of fractured space and deadly supernovas where giant computer-gods make war on each other.

But the Civilized Worlds face their own threat of war. A fanatical cult has seized the fabled city of Neverness and plans to take over the galaxy. Though the cult worships Danlo's long-lost father as a god, he casts his lot with its opponents--and is sent to Neverness to try to reason with its leaders. Instead he must fight to survive: against the warrior-poet who has vowed to take his life, the madman with a star-killing weapon and a grim ultimatum, the charismatic leader of the cult--once Danlo's greatest friend, now his fiercest enemy--and his own unbreakable vow never to harm a living thing.

A contemporary master of speculative fiction and incomparable world-building, David Zindell continues his monumental epic that sweeps us from the outer reaches of the galaxy to the inner depths of the human mind, a stirring cosmic drama of a man of peace torn between the implacable cosmic forces of divinity and destruction.

War in Heaven continues the Adventures of Danlo wi Soli Ringess. This is Space-opera at its best. The book is choke-full of great ideas, characters that feel real and depth unusual in most of space-opera.

If you're looking for a great, enthralling read that will take you away and at the same time make you think, provoke thoughts and reactions, that is a book for you. David Zindell explores many themes, from the evolution of technology to spirituality (of which he writes well and profusely) to personal choices and evolutions. The characters evolve from book to book, not always for good but they remain interesting and sometimes even fascinating. Only Danlo sometimes seems too nice for his own good but still, he is not alone in here. The bad guys are bad but still they have personal justifications that you can't ignore. The world is fascinating wiith a mix of technological wonders, ancient beliefs and ever-present spirituality ; it feels realistic and still manages to not resemble any other Sci-Fi world too closely.

I would definitely recommend War in Heaven to anyone with an interest in deep, thought-provoking Sci-Fi.

I read this book with great anticipation and was not disappointed. The writing and the imaginary worlds continue to enthrall and the plot is again excellent and plausible with many twists but as always it is Zindell's descriptive powers which continue to entertain and enthrall all the way through this book until the ending--where, after such a great story which was written to be totally believable in the context of the universe in which it was set and with the main characters having human flaws as well (adding to the empathy for them)--Danlo was suddenly described to become a superman like character. This totally disappointed me and was out-of-touch with the rest of the book. Still the rest of the novel was so good that it still gets 4 stars

Wonderful ending to the best series I've ever read!! 30 Sep 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In War in Heaven, Zindell has Danlo wi soli Ringess return to his home planet of Neverness to face his former best friend but now arch-enemy Hanuman. In what has become classic Zindell style, the prose is just the most flowing yet intense stuff there is - you'll totally get lost in the characters and in the writing. This book was a little more like The Broken God than The Wild, in that it is a little less sci-fi and more like a fantasy plot with larger-than-life characters in a small setting. I'd recommend anyone, sci-fi fan or not, to read this series. I should also note that if one does read any of these books, they are really meant to be read in order - it would be a little hard to understand what was going on in this book without having read The Broken God and then The Wild first. Five stars from me!!

a guide to life! 17 Jan 2000

This is one of the, if not THE, most philosophical series that I have ever read. Sit back and enjoy, while at the same time ponder on how you see your life. I have read the series twice already and will read it all again in another 5 years or so. I realize that this is a review of the whole series but I think that every book in the series is worth 5 stars. This really is a MUST read for all serious readers of sci-fi or anyone that wishes to think about the path on which they tread through this life. Honestly and truly a Requiem for Homo Sapiens.

The most enthralling science fiction epic of all time! 9 Jan 1999
By mghaynes@oakland.edu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Within the past year I managed to acquire and read Neverness and the Requiem for Homo Sapiens. I must say in all the years I've read science fiction, no book or series of books has affected me as deeply as The Broken God and War in Heaven. The sequences between Danlo and Hanuman Li Tosh are both heartbreaking and mesmerizing. Highly recommended for anyone who likes their science fiction with a dose of philosophy and beautiful imagery.
