Based on the best-selling book by Michael Foreman, War Game is the award-winning animated story of three English boys who leave their idyllic country lives to fight in the trenches of World War One. During a ceasefire on Christmas Day 1914, as if by a miracle, a soccer match is started between the Germans and the English soldiers, fulfilling a long-held dream of the three protagonists to one day play football for England. This powerful, moving story for the whole family features the voice of Kate Winslet, among others.

Product Description

From the award-winning book by Michael Forman, War Game is a beautifully animated story showing the ability of human spirit to exist even in the harshest conditions. It follows a group of young Englishmen to the trenches of World War One and the realisation of their dream to play football for England, be it only during a Christmas day ceasefire in 1914. The event has gone down as folk law history and this lovingly produced film charts the actual participant journey from tranquil village life to war side drama, and a young man's eyes opening to the harsh realities of war. SPECIAL FEATURES Interviews with author Michael Foreman, producer Iain Harvey and director Dave Unwin; Commentaries by Michael Foreman, Iain Harvey and Dave Unwin, An exclusive look into the animation process with line test dequences and the original character drawings; A moving photo gallery, an exclusive preview presentation of 'War Boy' and the original promotional trailers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone 30 July 2005
I cannot rate this film highly enough. I happened to catch it by chance when it was shown on Christmas Day a few years ago and I was mesmerised. It is heartbreakingly poignant. It is described as a children's film but it doesn't shy away from the brutality of war at all and it is certainly not just for children. It may be an animation but it will make you think about the futility of war, whatever your age. Please buy this wonderful film for yourselves and your children.

War Game is a desperately disappointing animated adaptation of Michael Foreman's excellent children's picture book about the Christmas Truce of 1914. Unfortunately, in the hands of the Snowman team it's all just too nice and safe for the respite to have any power, and the loss of the haunting ending from the book (where the hero's body slowly vanishes under falling snow) in favour of something less upsetting to the kiddies renders it all even more so what: only the beautiful yet quietly devastating closing lines of narration truly work. Terrible performances from many of the voice cast, too. At least at 29 minutes it's brief.

4.0 out of 5 stars War - an education 16 Sep 2011
Featuring the occasion when opposing English and German trench bound troops played a game of football together on Christmas Eve, the movie captures the brief respite of a joyous occasion which preceded a disasterous outcome.

Starting as a 'game' for the English lads, a football team of friends who sign up to fight for their country with little understanding of what they would experience, the film achieves an understanding of the horrors in a carefully controlled way and the fact that opposing sides are all human, have friends and families back home.

It ends dramatically but as an education for children who have little understanding of what grandparents experienced, it is a tour de force. It was shown on channel 4 on Christmas Day and is has something of 'The Snowman' about the style drawing. 29 minutes of worth while viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars War Game 1 Jun 2009
War Game is a beautifully crafted animation about 2 football mad lads from the country joining up to fight in world war 2. We all loved it and have watched it over and over again. My 7 yr old loved the football but also was transfixed by the historical aspect of it . One not to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars a truthful reminder of christmas past 18 Sep 2008

like the other reviewer, I managed to catch this story by accident, when it was shown on Christmas morning a few years ago.
Every year since I have looked for it in the Christmas tv listings.
it's a lovely story about the way that the first war affected this country like no other war before or since.
Ordinary lads from the country were volunteering to go and join the "fun" that they were told was happenning in France and Belgium.
Sadly so many of these innocent boys found out the truth too late and are still buried overseas.
It's a nice film to show to kids to tell them about the 1914 Christmas truce.
I certainly will be buying this to show the kids this Christmas.
