Synopsis

In 1939, as evacuation gets underway and Britain waits for the Luftwaffe to arrive, the lives of four very different women are about to collide in the sleepy little village of Crowmarsh Priors. Evangeline Fontaine has eloped from New Orleans with dashing naval captain Richard Fairfax. A Sussex village is about as far away from home as she can possibly imagine, away from memories of her first, passionate love. Alice Osbourne, living with her impossible mother, is resigned to life as the parish spinster since being jilted by her childhood sweetheart Richard. But the war will bring her friendships and passion she could never have foreseen. Tanni Joseph has fled from Vienna with her new husband, leaving her sisters to follow on the kindertransport. She arrives in Crowmarsh Priors with her newborn son, not knowing if her family are alive or if she will ever see them again... Frances Falconleigh is to see out the war with her godmother, Lady Marchmont, at Glebe House; her high spirits lead her into the ultimate danger to help her friend Tanni and are to turn her into a woman, almost overnight... Together these four women will face hardship, passion and danger. They form a bond that lasts for the rest of their lives and sees them through their darkest hours.

Great Holiday Read 8 July 2007
Format:Paperback
I recommend War Brides as the perfect book to take on holiday. It combines the wartime romances of five women with an unusual adventure story that, for once, features women doing all the exciting stuff. The descriptions are vivid--the reader gets a real taste of what life must have been like during the War and how brave ordinary people must have been. It will bring back memories for anyone who lived through it. My husband, who is a World War II buff, enjoyed it as much as I did

This novel has the potential to be good, but is let down by poor writing and even worse editing. The author repeatedly resorts to simply telling us about the action, rather than showing us. Too many times, we find out about major points through a one-sided phone call or by one character telling the others what's happened elsewhere. The plot is also riddled with unlikely coincidences or wildly improbable events.

This book would also have been improved by much tighter editing. It's full of spelling errors, grammatical mistakes and suffers from poor formatting. A good editor would also have cut down the clunky exposition. It's a shame that so many things spoiled this book. I do wonder how this got published in the state that it's in.

One of the best books ever! Our book group ALL loved the novel! The story is great and the characters are all so well drawn. We keep discussing which is our favourite of the war brides and going back to re-read our favourite parts. Helen Bryan writes beautifully.

Needs a better editor
The story was confusing initially, with each chapter describing different families, but then the reason for this became apparent and the story improved. Read more
