if u liked JUNK u'll love this, 1 Jan 2002

I picked this up thinking it was going to be a war book as the title suggests but as i read the blurb i realised it was quite the opposite. Being a punk myself i decided id give it a go and was so glad i did. It contains everything you would want in a book, suspence, humour, real life struggles and it really makes u think. But a warning if ur homophobic u should steer clear!! i loved it and cant wait to read more of his novels. This was very similar to "Junk" which i also reccomend

Fantastic mix of style, love and sk8boarding, 13 Sep 2000

This review is from: War Boy (Paperback)
"War Boy" is the best book I have read for a long time. The story, as told by 14 year old deaf mute Radboy, is a stream of consciousness and realisation that swept me along from beginning to end, avoiding all cliches and enveloping me in a world that's far outside my experience but made me feel a part of. The style is exhilerating and refreshing. The major strength of the book is the characters and how real they feel, and how touching when seen through Radboy's eyes. It's a book that I actually avoided reading for a couple of days because I didn't want it to end.

When Radboy's abusive father turns on him it is Jonnyboy who comes to the rescue. Radboy is a fourteen year old skinhead skater boy ("sk8er"), Jonnyboy his best friend some ten years his senior; they love one another, but while they are both queer ("kweer"), they are not lovers. The two boys escape together, Jonnyboy vowing to take care of Radbooy and not desert him. They join a bus load of drop-outs travelling to San Francisco where they team up with a couple of skinhead speed-freak lover boys and Ula, the sister of an anarchist who is dying in hospital.
But Jonnyboy has a love interest in San Francisco, and disappears for a while leaving Radboy with the two lover boys, and to find someone he falls in love with. When Jonnyboy returns the intrepid five hatch up a hair-brain anarchic scheme, which soon looks to be falling apart.
You will fall in love with Radboy within the first few pages as he begins to tell his story. He is deaf and dumb, but this in no way holds him back, he has many ways of communicating, he is bright and resourceful and demands no pity. The unique prose style alone is enough to endear one to Radboy.
One does not have to be a fan of skin-heads or skate boarding to enjoy this, it is a delightful story peopled with appealing characters. It is a love story, at times funny, often moving, and well worth reading simply for the sheer beauty and originality of the prose.
