Product Description

Product Description
This is the very first issue of the Del Prado/Osprey Publishing Lead Soldier Collection Partwork (which took the form of 75 weekly issues). Each partwork shows the documentary and iconographical sources that have been used to create the accompanying figure. There are plentiful black & white and colour illustrations of British troops - their uniform details and them in real life action in the 2nd world war. There is an introduction to the Commandos in the 1940-1945 period; and each illustrated soldier is described fully in the Colour Plates section of the partwork. Photographs include: A Commando soldier in training negotiating a rock face; Commandos returning to the Lofoten islands in December 1941 (of huge propaganda value); Sergeant Tom Durrant, No. 1 Commando - a portrait; Lord Lovat and Brigadier Robert Laycock conversing on the quayside at Newhaven after the Dieppe raid; Commandos with demolition equipment disembarking from a landing craft during training for the Ardour estuary raid; The September 1942 Middle East Commando raid on Tobruk; Lord Lovat's 1st Special Service Brigade headquarters wading ashore on the Normandy Beaches - 6th June 1944; The 2nd Special Service Brigade formed in Italy in late 1943 -troops of No. 2 Commando landing on Corfu; Normandy 17 June 1944 - Lt. Col. Peter Young briefing a sniper for a mission.
