I admit to being more than a little surprised by this novel having read several other books by Huth, which were full of her wonderful humour, in particular South of The Lights & Land Girls. Wanting has an edge of uneasiness to it, undertones of frightening behaviour, which can be a little surprising at times for a reader more used to Huth's more familiar homely scripts. As the novel progresses we become more & more intrigued as to just what exactly Harry Antler is prepared to do, and how far he is prepared to go to win Viola the supposed love of his life. There are several characters, endemic to the plot each with their own idiosyncrasies. Lonely Alfred Baxter, shy Maisie, and the eccentric Edwin, you get to know them all well and realise their importance to the plot. Once you realise what exactly is happening it becomes addictive and you really do begin to wonder what next from the fiendish Harry. Huth's talent for setting the scene is wonderful and this novel does not disappoint. This was not the Angela Huth that I had expected but it has inspired me to search out and read Easy Silence, her previous novel.

Huth At Her Best 31 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Huth is one of the best kept secrets of modern day fiction. She quietly creeps into your way of thinking as you read the book. No big explosions, no twisting plot akin to thrillers et al. Rather a subtle elaboration of an idea. The papers are right when they say that she is first class. She is.

I found this a quick and easy read all 227 pages of it. The beginning seemed a little odd at first, but in the ensuing chapters one begins to see how it all links in. Clever.
The character Harry Antlers made my flesh creep, Angela Huth certainly brought him to life. The story flowed easily and we do get a feeling as to the tension building.

Edwin Hadley, another peculiar character, his manner seemed to make him much older than he really was and I sensed he seemed to be terribly old fashioned.

If I were to be a little critical it would be in dating, some of it seemed a bit mixed and this confused me since on page 2 we get a date of 1920 which is when Eileen is first introduced to Mr Alfred Baxter and since they were together 53 years that made it 1973 but some how I kept losing which year it was set in. The descrition of clothes and where Viola had lived all her childhood. Maybe it was just me, but I do like to get a feel of the year the story is set in.

Angela Huth is quite a prolific writer and catches the readers imamgination.
