I admit to being more than a little surprised by this novel having read several other books by Huth, which were full of her wonderful humour, in particular South of The Lights & Land Girls. Wanting has an edge of uneasiness to it, undertones of frightening behaviour, which can be a little surprising at times for a reader more used to Huth's more familiar homely scripts. As the novel progresses we become more & more intrigued as to just what exactly Harry Antler is prepared to do, and how far he is prepared to go to win Viola the supposed love of his life. There are several characters, endemic to the plot each with their own idiosyncrasies. Lonely Alfred Baxter, shy Maisie, and the eccentric Edwin, you get to know them all well and realise their importance to the plot. Once you realise what exactly is happening it becomes addictive and you really do begin to wonder what next from the fiendish Harry. Huth's talent for setting the scene is wonderful and this novel does not disappoint. This was not the Angela Huth that I had expected but it has inspired me to search out and read Easy Silence, her previous novel.
