Book Description

5 July 2012 Spot & Henry
Not everyone has to go to the pet shop to find their perfect pet...

Once upon a time, there lived a boy called Henry. What Henry wanted more than anything in the whole wide world. . . MORE than chips. . . MORE than a cowboy costume. . . MORE than an all-expenses-paid trip to the moon. . . was a DOG.

A lovable tale of adventure and friendship. . . and the lengths some will go to find it.

A great book to springboard early childhood lessons and imaginative play on pets.

About the Author

Fiona Roberton was born in Oxford and studied art and design in London and New York. She has kept the wolf from the door for a number of years by working as a designer, but has since befriended the wolf, and has it to tea on Tuesdays. Sometimes, they go out. Porkchop & Mouse (published by Puffin in 2007) was inspired by her love of cakes, holidays, and her inability to share. Wanted: The Perfect Pet, was inspired by her love of dogs, ducks and disguises.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quacking read. 15 Oct 2012
By Paul B TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a really well written tale for children that will have them all smiling by the end.

The story of a boy who is convinced he wants a dog and actually finds that there is something just as good and a duck who just wants a friend is told with such emotion but with a small wordcount and some clever simple artwork.

The pages are also full of neat touches. My 8 year old read the book to her 6 year old sister and was in stitches when she got to the newspaper adverts. They both loved it and it's since become a favourite book to sit and read together.

It may not be the longest children's story ever, but it makes up for it with a fantastic tale of friendship and beautiful artwork that children will love.

5.0 out of 5 stars acute tale, wonderfully illustrated 12 Oct 2012
By The Truth TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I assume this is the first book in what's to be a series of tales about an unlikely couple of friends called Spot and Henry. Henry is a charming young man who wants a new pet dog but ends up with a pet duck called spot.

'Wanted: The Perfect Pet' is an endearing tale which is humorous to read and wonderfully illustrated. The pages are big and make the perfect platform from which to show off the quirky illustrations.

Overall, one of the more original children's books I've read and certainly a series I look forward to reading more off. The only problem with it I can see, is that you might have a fight on your hands, as no doubt your child will soon want a duck of his very own too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quack Quack, Woof Woof 8 Oct 2012
By Sam
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Children's books are all the same aren't they? There are only so many stories that you can tell about getting lost or making sure you go to the toilet in the right place. However, time after time authors and illustrators come up with new ways to entertain the adults reading the books as well as the kids listening. `Wanted: The Perfect Pet' covers two perennial child-friendly topics in friendship and pets. Henry, a young boy, really wants a pet dog, whilst a lonely duck really want a friend. What better way to make a friend than dress up and pretend to be a dog?

`Wanted' is a brilliantly subversive book that is generic child fiction on the surface, but adds a splash of Dr Seuss-esque surrealism into the story to make it far more entertaining. Illustration wise, the book looks nice and the wording is clean. There is plenty of simple language for the youngest to read, but also some illustrations containing more text for older children. There are loads of fun little `Easter Eggs' to find throughout the story as Fiona Roberton has great fun with the images to a simple story.

There is a touch of melancholy to `Wanted' that is very effecting, but matters are resolved in a way that is both satisfying and won't upset anyone. There is a clear indication that there are future adventures for Henry and Spot to have together - I for one will look out for them. `Wanted: The Perfect Pet' was a joy to read.
