Amazon.co.uk Review
As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianist’s Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description

Based upon Mark Millar's explosive graphic novel series and helmed by stunning visualist director Timur Bekmambetov - creator of the most successful Russian film franchise in history, the Night Watch series - Wanted tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice.

25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock punching rut.

Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie).

After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself.

With wickedly brilliant tutors - including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman) - Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

4.0 out of 5 stars ridiculous, but very enjoyable!, 31 Aug 2008
By Mr. R. W. Graham (Lincoln, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
first of all, i think wanted is one of those films that's going to be a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. the plot is ludicrous, but it's so much fun to watch that as long as you don't take any of it seriously, you should have a lot of fun with it.
performances are spot on. james mcavoy in particular who i've become a huge fan of in recent years, and i think he's become one of our finest young actors is terrific, although you wouldn't neccesarily picture him as an action hero, he does a terrific job. angelina jolie is excellent, one of her best roles in a long while, and morgan freeman, who let's face it, is incapable of giving a bad performance ever, no matter what he's in is very sinister as the head of the group of assasins.
plot as i said is ludicrous, and although it is visually stunning it does seem to rip off the matrix movies, and the russian director's own nightwatch and daywatch movies. in short, it's big, loud, dumb, and very enjoyable and one of the best pure action movies in years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Storyline, But Fun To Watch, 28 May 2009
By DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
When I first saw Wanted, I thought that this film might be rubbish, yet I ignored my senses and just rented it, and I have to say in some ways I was right, but this film is fun and it's nice to see a weaker lead role from someone who's not typically macho. James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson reminds me of John Dorian from Scrubs, he's not a natural leader, but a follower, and is easily bullied by his co-workers and boss. So when Sloan (perfectly executed by Morgan Freeman) chose him I was rather surprised.

The story is pretty much like a samurai movie, he is sent on a quest to kill his father's killer - but first he must train and learn the ways of the Fraternity, their gang of assassins who are a bit odd at times. Obviously, Fox (played by Angelina Jolie) is the best actor out of them, and her Liz Hurley style impression of the devil in Bedazzled was a treat. I wasn't impressed with Common's role, he was mainly just there holding a gun to Wes' head, which I thought really didn't bring out the best in him - he's better in American Gangster and I'm hoping for a good role in Terminator Salvation will be better.

This is a good fantasy movie, but otherwise it's rather far fetched, and the fact it's using an old John Woo idea from Stranglehold just shows that the ideas are not as well developed as they should have been. The slowing down of time by controlling the heart beat is a cool idea, but it's not really groundbreaking. There's one scene where everything just goes absolutely crazy and the CGI looks rather naff too, you'll be able to spot it a mile away. One thing I do have to praise though is the soundtrack, it's good music, and it's not too much in your face.

This isn't a bad DVD or film, it's just not excellent - though seeing it once isn't the worst thing you can do, it's entertaining for the duration. It's a real pity the DVD is rubbish though, no extras worth speaking about and there's not many audio/subtitle options. Obviously there's the Italian and Spanish dub, but seriously - don't bother as it's just like when we got imported Japanese martial arts movies, you're best with the subtitles.

Give this a go, it's exciting and it's good to see an average Joe win - and it has the bonus of Angelina Jolie, otherwise this isn't going to be played much afterwards. If you have blu-ray get that, as the extra audio humph and amazing visuals make this more fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I Wanted!, 2 Feb 2009
By chuckles "barnie884" (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
First thing I have to say is PLEASE ignore all the 1 and 2 star reviews. Just as in a few movies I have reviewed recently, I think these people just do not get it. The first thing to say that this is an adaptation of one of the most popular graphic novels ever. If you take this into account (and therefore don't take the movie too seriously) then you should be in for a rip-roaring 2 hours of over-the-top Matrix style action. The story itself differs from the original graphic novel, however it really works for me. It's the story of a guy stuck in a dead end relationship, terrible job and life whose life is changed in the blink of an eye. With a good plot, good soundtrack, loads of action, good performances and a good twist at the end I highly recommend this movie.
