Mariah .......she's a conundrum isn't she ? A singer with , you would think ,all the requisite requirements to make great music but one whose ghastly proclivity for vocal pyrotechnics and histrionic showing off makes anything she does un-listenable .
I Want To Know What Love Is was originally a hit for Foreigner and is one of those songs that is easy to dismiss as a bloated MOR pudding but when ever it comes on the radio I always find myself enjoying it's emollient charms and singing lustily along ( circumstances allowing ).It has a simple wistful charm and a undemanding calm melody . A guilty pleasure , but a pleasure none the less.
Or it least it was until Mariah Carey wrapped her quavering tonsils and hydraulic lungs around it. Never one to let the core tune of a song guide her she wrings every nuance , every demonstrative ounce out of the song till it's a flaccid disembowelled husk. It's like her ego will not except that she is capable of feeling the same about any given subject as mere mortals so has to apply Wagnerian overload in order to express the superannuated facets of her personality .
Of course she is not the only one guilty of this but she is probably the worst. Having massacred Nilsson's sublime Without You she has now slaughtered I Want To Know What Love Is. This version is truly appalling .An overwrought travesty .She can warble all she likes but until she engages with the emotional hub of a song instead of tripping up and down the scales like a hyperactive conductor who has overdosed on cola and foam shrimps she is just noise.
