Product Description

Review

When was a book about how to be a producer a page-turner? That is what this is - and it is essential reading for anyone contemplating a life in the theatre fast lane. --Thelma Holt, Producer

Commercial theatrical production requires a combination of optimism, acumen and a dose of good fortune. It also requires a great deal of complicated background information. Seabright's book is that rare combination - a perfect handbook for beginners and a useful aide memoire for those of us who've been at it for years. --Nicholas Allott, Managing Director, Cameron Mackintosh Ltd

Product Description

Drawing on his own experiences as a producer of theatre productions at every level - from university, via the fringe, to the West End - James Seabright takes the rookie producer through every stage of the process: the development of an idea, raising the money and budgeting, negotiating rights, hiring a director and production team, marketing the show, rehearsals and on to opening night. Ideal for prospective and novice producers, or for anyone who's had a dream of getting a show on, this essential guide by an industry insider reveals everything you need to know to negotiate the right venue for the right price, who to approach when money's looking tight, and what to do if you get a bad review. The book also features a comprehensive appendix with sample contracts and letters of agreement, lists of key press contacts, rehearsal spaces and a sample marketing pack.

Sheer excellence 10 July 2010
By M. J. Saxton VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the book people have been waiting for for years. I covers all the areas you really need to know when producing theatre at all levels.

The chapter on budgetting is especially outstanding as it not only covers important areas, but draws attention to things that often can get overlooked by the novice. Also the budget outlines are clear and explained in detail so it is very straightforward to put your own costings together.

There are also plenty of examples drawn from the author's personal experience which stops it from being dry-as-a-bone theory.

Everyone who wants to get a show on should read this, and it should be recommended reading on all Arts Admin courses.

This is a superbly written and entirely comprehensive guide to everything any aspiring Cameron Mackintosh or Sonia Friedman could ever want to know about the business of producing theatre.

I used to travel in such contractually treacherous valleys, with their many unforeseen pitfalls of unforeseen venue percentages and complex royalties, and the numerous, confusing different marketing and publicity paths- I wish I had beenprovides a clear, readable guide that is also a revealing insight into less the backstage life of emerging British theatre but the back office.

Comes with excellent list of online resources as well.

Thoroughly recommended!

A must have 28 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is a must have for anyone with aspirations to stage a show in the west end or at the Edinburgh Fringe. It's chock full of practical advice on all business aspects of theatre productions, including typical royalty splits between creative team members, deals with theatre venues, etc. It's so useful that I'd want to have it available in a searchable- and bookmarkable format at all times, i.e. on my iPhone. Once this book is available as an eBook I'll give it 5 stars.
