Biography

3OH!3 doesn’t like to brag. Sean Foreman and Nathaniel ‘Nat’ Motte say that making their loud, distorted, electronic-pop music is not about the trophies and notoriety. No, forming 3OH!3 (named after the duo’s area code in Boulder, Colorado) was always about something larger than themselves. It was and remains about being FUN!

BBC Review

Some critics say crunkcore is possibly the worst genre of music ever created.

But while pundits ponder how dreadful it is compared to say, happy hardcore, 3OH!3, one of the scene’s leading lights, have got on with making their second album – their major label debut.

Want’s opener Tapp alerts listeners that the quality of what’s to follow may be low, with a minute of pointless synths parping along like a Phoenix Nights-approved cover of Calvin Harris’s Acceptable in the 80s.

But come second track Punkbitch the crunkcore tag begins to make sense: alongside the synths there are the boisterous, skittering beats and gruff-voiced grime of Southern US crunk, coupled with the attack and machismo vocals of a post-hardcore-cum-screamo band. It’s a bizarre mix that sounds like Lil Jon, the Bloodhound Gang and Andrew WK trying to get served at the world’s dirtiest dive bar.

Lead single Don’t Trust Me initially has shades of day-glo Brits Hadouken!, but is lyrically disturbing – some might go so far as to argue it’s misogynistic and offensive. “Don’t trust a ho’… ‘cause the ho’ won’t trust me,” and “Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips,” are laughably bad lines, but are they said in jest? 3OH!3 (aka Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte) met at university, so are presumably only playing dumb. Let’s hope their fans are, too: Don’t Trust Me has sold two million copies in the US.

Katy Perry sings on a new version of single Starstrukk (their spelling) and the results are enlightening. With a winning vocal performance and a track largely bereft of nonsensical shouting and vocoder tweaking, 3OH!3 are greatly improved. Obligatory ballad Still Around reinforces this with clever Timbaland beats and a charming Elton John-like piano motif.

The Boulder, Colorado pair prove with Want that they can write both brash, dumb songs and melodic, simpering ditties. I’m Not Your Boyfriend Baby, for example, includes the emetic line, “I’m not your knight in shining armour so I’ll leave you with this kiss”. Cringe-worthy, but not as questionable as their lyrical content elsewhere.

Foreman and Motte seem to be conflicted between macho posturing and a need to express emotions, albeit in a resolutely banal fashion. But given the commercial success of the former approach, it’s likely their next batch of songs will be more gung-ho than not. --Lou Thomas

I recently got this album and oh my god I love it! Their songs are different from everyone elses, the songs are unique to them and I love it. I'd say that my favourite track on here is "I'm Not Your Boyfriend Baby" I don't know why, just makes me laugh! Sean and Nath have done a great job with this album and I recommend for everyone to buy it!

This is an awesome album from two amazing guys! I think album is really good because their music is different from most other artists and this uniqueness makes them an amazing duo. I think they are going to have a massive 2010! My favourite tracks are Don't Trust Me and Starstrukk ft, Katy Perry because they are both really catchy tunes. WANT is definately worth buying because not only do you get cool songs, but you also get remixes. Sean and Nat are two cool guys who are so full of energy and enthusiasm and this is portrayed in their music. Roshni B

There is no date of release for this CD in the UK yet, but when it is released make sure you preorder your copy as from listening on youtube it's full of alternative hits. I love 30H!3 as their music is different to everyone else's out there. Their songs are full of catchy and fun lyrics, with awesome beats. I would love to see them live after being told they are amazing (They performed at Leeds and Reading festivals 2009 and are to open for Paramore later on this month [September]) Definately keep a look out for this album.

This album is a must have, 3oh!3 define what music this decade is all about..... taking risks and creating their own unique sound. With a mix of strong lyrical mixes and unique techno rock beats it creates the perfect album.
i love there single "Dont Trust Me" with it's catchy lyrics and dance/ rock beat! Other notible songs include "Electroshock" which defines there sound completly and "Starstruck" is also great.
Everyone should go out and buy there single "Dont Trust Me" and then there album "Want" :)

Don't Trust Me and Starstuck are 100% amazing, some of the best Electro songs released in 2009. Sadly the honest truth is the rest of the record is so eclipsed by these tracks that it just leaves you with disappointment.

These guys should have put out an EP until they had more consistently amazing material. Grab those tracks as singles and see what happens with their next album.

For a great, similar and extremely consistent album try Cobra Starship's "Hot Mess" also released this year.

This album is so great :) I love 3Oh!3 at the moment and this album just proves their musical abilities and creativity! The songs are addictive and memorable and I always find myself bursting into songs from this album especially 'Starstrukk'! Suits many different types of people because its like a combination of pop rock. Those guys are amazing and were really good supporting Katy Perry! I would definitely recommend this!
