Review

I still remember my early days as an author when my main experience of publicising my novels was to do everything I could to avoid it! I was terrified of giving talks and dreaded the thought of people sitting at home, listening to me on the radio. I wish I'd been able to read this book back then. Wannabe a Writer We've Heard Of? is fantastically informative in ways I would never have imagined. I've published more than 20 novels now but reading this, I've still learned many tips and tricks about promotion and PR I didn't know before and, more to the point, I shall be employing them. This guide covers not only getting into print, but how to get your book out thereA" to be appreciated by as many people as possible. The advice is invaluable and thanks to JWJ I'm now working on my first ever elevator pitch. (Watch out Stephen Spielberg - that means YOU!) Jane writes so entertainingly, and with such verve and wit, that anyone would enjoy this book, even those who don't want to be published and have never written anything longer than a shopping list - it's that much fun to read. To sum up I really, really recommend this guide - read it, learn from it and be braver than you think you are. Seriously, it could change your life. Jane Wenham-Jones describes her own books as being about "shagging and drinking" and this book has some useful advice for anyone writing in a similar style. For those of us writing in other genres, there's less of value. For example, she states that glasses are best avoided in author photos as they "cause all sort of problems with reflection". Appropriate for her market, but not if you're releasing an academic work where glasses are almost part of the uniform. Despite occasional nods to male writers and those in other genres, it's clear where her experience lies.

Good writers will always show, rather than tell - so what does this book show us? That it's worth supplementing your own material with quotes from other writers. That a how-to book is a good place to promote your other books. That proof-reading isn't an important part of the publishing process.

Most writers are expert procrastinators, but I feel that advice on how to get Amazon to remove reviews you don't like is wasting time that would be better spent on writing or pursuing more positive avenues for publicity.

An entertaining, occasionally interesting but ultimately disappointing read for writers seeking to improve their public profile.

She's done it again 5 Jun 2011

This is the second Wannabe book by Jane Wenham-Jones and the second Wannabe book to make me regularly burst out laughing while reading it - not something that's ever happened to me while reading a book on writing before!

It's packed full of really useful advice which translates easily from the writing world to other professions, so I've been able to get hints and tips for my own small business as well - and the book has helped me work up a plan to expand my erotica writing so I can justify a boudoir shoot with a fabulous local photographer on business expenses ;o)

This is an excellent how-to for writers and would-be writers, with lots of advice, practical experience and inspiration. Anyone who thinks that writing a book ends with typing 'The End' may have a bit of a surprise at how much an author can do to influence their sales, and it is also heartening to realise how much Jane Wenham Jones has done to maximise her own career opportunities. Those who can't afford to pay a professional PR will get the next best thing if they buy this.

Fun to read
The book is a good read, but not sure I would take her advice to the lengths she suggests in it. It was fun to read though.
