'Wandering' is one of my favourite books. Slim enough to fit into a pocket, it contains sharp, unsentimental observations that capture every emotion a human being is capable of experiencing, from pleasure and wonder to loss and cynicism. A collection of poems and travel notes written on a journey over the Alps into Italy, Wandering gives us a fresh way of looking at the world. Hesse has the gift of presenting all his insights, yearnings, and foolishness in a way that makes one smile with recognition and pleasure at the humour inherent in life. As Hesse himself puts it: 'How beautiful, how silly, how magical - this poor life.'
