Review

"Once you dip in and start you won't be able to stop" --Tribune, 13 November 2009

"If you have a favourite poem you'll probably find it in I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, which contains some of the nation's best-loved offerings. Famous names includes Shakespeare, Shelley, Wordsworth and Wilfred Owen. The book also contains lots of interesting facts about poets and there's an index to help you search by a poem's most famous line" --Co-Operative Magazine, November 2009

"This is an excellent collection of all those poems that you perhaps only half remember. Not only are there some of the most important poems in the language, but also potted biographies and an index of famous lines for those post-prandial 'guess the poem' quizzes. The perfect stocking filler." --Choice, December issue 2009

"Sampson's enlightening collection offers a wide variety of poems, each enhanced by background material that lends useful context. From Shakespeare to Shelley, Blake to Brooke, anyone who loves poetry or appreciates the inherent richness of the English language will find much to relish." --Good Book Guide, November 2009

Product Description

Do you remember the famous opening lines, 'Tyger tyger, burning bright'? Or 'Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?' But would you be able to name the poems or the poets? The English language is jam-packed with wonderful verses that we've all heard at some point, but probably forgotten. "I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud" will remind you of all those long-forgotten poems that you were taught at school, together with mini-biographies and introductions. This title includes: "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" - Coleridge; "If" - Rudyard Kipling; "Dulce et Decorum Est" - Wilfred Owen; "Song of Myself" - Walt Whitman; "Digging" - Seamus Heaney; and "Not Waving But Drowning" - Stevie Smith. Complete with an index of famous lines as well as authors, any poetry enthusiast will love the collection of best-loved poems alongside the lively commentary. "I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud", is a perfect addition to any poetry lover's collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just a taste and a reminder, 15 Oct 2009

This review is from: I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud: And Other Poems You Half-Remember from School (Hardcover)
I love poetry and have several dozen poetry books so I didn't really need another, especially one whose contents would almost certainly be replicated elsewhere on my bookshelves. But it was tempting to have another means of finding all the half-familiar lines in one volume, although the Golden Treasury and Oxford Anthologies achieve the same end.

As the editor of this little anthology says, the choice of poem is subjective and it would be impossible to include everyone's much loved or half-remembered poems. Even so, I was disappointed that The Way through the Woods (Kipling), and I Remember, I Remember (Thomas Hood), a particular favourite of my mother's - she would often read it to me when I was a small child - were missing. It shouldn't matter as I have them elsewhere, but somehow it did. Being realistic though, it's almost inevitable that everyone will be disappointed about some omission or other.

Again inevitably, only short extracts of longer poems are included so the selection from, say, Hiawatha may not be your favourite part of the poem. Nevertheless, the book provides a taste. I was also pleased to find one or two poems that I was not familiar with, together with a couple of poets I'd never heard of.

The poems are arranged in chronological order, from Chaucer and Marlowe right up to Wendy Cope (Bloody Men) and Carol Ann Duffy, which places them in their context more intuitively than, say, an alphabetic listing of the poets by surname. I like too the notes about the individual poets and some of their poetry as these provide a taste of their lives and work.

There are more comprehensive anthologies available but at Amazon's price for the hardback edition, with an attractive cover - a sort of moiré-effect - this would make a lovely stocking filler or tree present, or a gift for someone you'd like to tempt into poetry. I shall eventually put mine in the guest room for people to dip into before they go to sleep. If you treat it as it's no doubt intended - as a taste and a reminder - it's a delightful little volume.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bite Size Poetry, 7 Feb 2010

This was a lovely book...Was disappointed that most of the poems are just the first few verses and most are not printed in their entirity. I purchased it to read with an elderly aunt, who can remember all the poems - we were just disappointed that although she could complete all of them, it would have been better if it it had been made clear that the poems were not published in full.

Mum attends a poetry class at church and was asked to recite "If" by Kipling at the next meeting.

When I saw this book on Amazon I thought it would be the perfect gift.

A well presented hardback, it looks more expensive than it actually cost.
