By M. Joyce TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 29 Jan. 2014
Walter Berry has for a long time been one of my favourite singers. I saw him at the Vienna State Opera in the early 80s. He was playing Figaro, one of his celebrated Mozart roles, and it was clear that the audience loved him and that he knew it; accordingly, his performance was perhaps a little self-indulgent at times. However, when it came to Figaro’s last act aria, he conveyed a level of emotion I have rarely seen on the operatic stage.

This CD, part of the “Wiener Staatsoper Live” series, offers us a series of extended highlights from Berry’s extraordinary career (nearly 1300 performances of more than 80 roles from his first appearance aged 21 in 1950 to his swan-song, at the Staatsoper, at any rate, in 1995. The live recordings here cover most of that time, dating from Masetto and Wozzeck in 1955 to La Roche in “Capriccio” in 1993.

The CD gives a fair representation of Berry’s versatility; I can think of no other singer who has performed Papageno, Pizarro, Wozzeck and Ochs with equal distinction. Although he made the occasional foray into the Italian repertoire (represented here by a scene from “Falstaff”) he specialized, of course, in Mozart and Strauss. Here we have his Masetto and Guglielmo (both sung in German), his Figaro and his inimitable Leporello, a role he recorded on more than one occasion. From Strauss, we hear a snippet of his lovable Ochs, his definitive Barak and his final great Strauss role, La Roche. His Wozzeck is both sensitively sung and acutely acted and he is most impressive as Telramund and Klingsor in excerpts from “Lohengrin” and “Parsifal” respectively.

The sound on this “live” CD is not always perfect, but the great Austrian bass-baritone’s performances are uniformly excellent.
