Simply Marvelous,
By Grady P. "The Mock Turtle" (Mississippi, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Walt Disney's Fables Vol.3 [DVD] (DVD)
In the short movie Donald In Mathmagic Land, Donald plans on going hunting, but accidentally enters Mathmagic Land. Having no idea where he was, seeing as how the trees seriously have "square roots," and where you might see one or two odd charachers from Alice In Wonderland, such as the bird with a pencil for a head, and the mome raths, he probably thought that he had gone looney! But the spirit of math kindly tells him were he is, and they embark on an adventure through time, to discover the possibilities of mathematics. In the short movie Ben And Me,a little mouse voiced by Sterling Holloway, meets Ben Franklin, and together, discover electricity, which just proves that Disney isn't the only one in history that had something to do with a mouse...

Interesting shorts, though may not be worth buying,
By JOE IN DA JUNGLE (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Walt Disney's Fables Vol.3 [DVD] (DVD)
As well as full blown collector's editions of their shorts in the guise of the Walt Disney Treasures sets, Disney has been releasing compolations of classic shorts and featurettes. The shorts featured on this set are supposedly themed to classic tales due to the title of "Disney Fables", though only one seems to fully qualify, with the other two being original fantasies starring Donald. There's the psychedelic and educational short "Donald in Mathmagicland", as well as the charming "Ben and Me" and the funny short "Modern Inventions".I respect these kiddy aimed DVDs featuring classic Disney material, as they help introduce kids to vintage gold as opposed to some of the dreck that kids are subject to watching today. Aside from that, I think that I'd only recommend to give this a rental. First of all, these shorts have or will be released in a better shape (digitally restored as opposed to getting a grainy and washed out VHS transfer like here) in the Walt Disney Treasure sets. The Chronological Donald Volume 1 contains "Modern Inventions" and "Ben and Me" will appear on the Disney Rarities set this December in Region 1 (and probably only will as BVHE UK are a bit skimpy on Treasures here, so import that one if you can). Secondly, there's the issue of getting good value for money. The RRP of this 51 minute set is £12.99, as opposed to the four or more hours that one would find on a Treasures set for a RRP of £21.99 or so. Overall, this set may be worth a rent or as a fun stocking filler for Christmas. Other than that, I would personally just get a better set.
