4.0 out of 5 stars History Buffs and Disney Fanatics Will Love It, 30 Jun 2004
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews

During World War II, Walt Disney almost bankrupted his company producing stuff for the war effort. Now, we get a chance to see this part of animation history at home on DVD with this two disc set.

Disc 1 features 29 shorts. They range from entertainment with a patriotic edge, like "Donald Gets Drafted" or "Private Pluto," to shorts purely to help with the war like "The New Spirit" and "Out of the Frying Pan and into the Firing Line." There are even shorts used to fight disease in South America like "Cleanliness Brings Health" and "The Winged Scourge." I was surprised to learn from this disc about the films Disney was making for Canada even before the US entered the war.

Of course, the highlight of this disc is "Der Fuehrer's Face" which finds Donald trapped in Nazi Germany.

Disc two's main attraction is "Victory Through Air Power." This feature length movie was produced to bring the arguments of a book by the same name to more people. It makes a compelling argument that the Allies needed to build up their air forces to win the war, arguments about modern warfare that still apply today.

Disc two also features a few of the educational shorts Disney produced during that time. Frankly, after viewing the two that are included in their entirety, I'm glad that most of them are just highlighted. I don't find watching a film on how to fire a gun or how to flush rivet that entertaining. There are lots of production galleries and even galleries of some project this Disney fan had never heard of before. Finally, we have interviews with Disney veterans Joe Grant, John Hench, and Roy Disney.

This is a set that Disney buffs will want because it fills in some time in the studio's history. It also has interest for historians of all stripes as it presents a picture of life on the home front during World War II. Since the entertainment value of much of the disc is low, I took away one star. I probably won't go back to this set in the near future, but I was fascinated by much of what I saw here and am thrilled that the studio released this material so fans can view it today.

5.0 out of 5 stars World War 2 Walt Disney, 18 May 2007

Walt Disney Treasures
ON THE FRONT LINES

This is a brilliant set if you can find a copy, remastered cartoons from WW2 including propaganda and training manuals as well as the movie "Victory Through Air Power" a film Walt Disney made to support the development of long range bombers, which he believed in and based it on the book of the same name. The movie also tells the story of development of aircraft.

The short "Stop the tanks" a training short about the Boys AT-rifle will be of a special interest, it is a blend of cartoon, including parts with Hitler shouting in German such word as sauerkraut and translated differently at the same time (not unlike Top Secret) there are parts with a training instructor of the Canadian army demonstrating the Boys AT-rifle in action and one can understand why it was called Charlie the [...].

This is a double CD, including the Oscar winning short In Der Fuhrer's Face and many more. The propaganda is blatant and far from the political correctness we see today which makes it all the more interesting.

This is an collectors item, it comes in a tin box and the cartoons have been remastered to perfection. Walt Disney studios deserve credit for the quality of the production. Anyone with a keen interest in WW2 or in Walt Disney movies will want it in their collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Victory through animation power, 22 Jul 2006

You don't watch "Victory Through Air Power" (disc 2) for its entertainment value. or for it's historical accuracy (did WW1 pilots really throw bricks at each other?) Or for the fact that it makes a completely cogent argument - towards the end of the film, it makes the case that a bomber, bristling with machine guns, carrying a 10 ton bomb load could fly from Alaska to Japan, it doesn't tell us how the bomber would be able to fly back again! You certainly don't watch the film for the annoying pieces to camera of the ex Russian fighter ace presenting his argument in a thick Russian accent. You watch the film for the quality of the annimation - that's why I gave it 4 stars. The Disney artists use a dazling array of graphic devices to illustrate their arguments- from battle ships turning into bombers to fighter planes morphing into aerial bridges. The artwork is just stunning and, given the fact that none of it was computer generated, I don't think it has dated.
