Just spent a week in Bilbao and surrounding areas. I found this book helped me make the most of my time there. In particular there are some great restaurants featured that i would not have found by just wondering around like all the other tourists. The book also stretches to San Sebastian and other parts of the Rioja region so it is perfect if you are planning a mini-road trip. It is NOT for the budget traveler but for people who like to spoil themselves a little on their holidays.

The Wallpaper guide for Bilbao is an up to date, up front, modern and useful companion to discovering the city. It is compact, easy to use and gives addresses, phone numbers and public transport routes which come in handy, especially as so little is written about Bilbao in other published guides to Spain. This Phaidon press guide is indeed the only one dedicated to Bilbao rather than to the north of Spain in general.

Just like the city, Wallpaper's guide is clean, modern and well designed. Unfortunately this guide is a little too sparse to satisfy anyone staying more than a few days; it lacks in depth knowlegde of the area and really only offers a glimpse of what there is to do and see. However, as a guide for someone on a city break, you could go a lot further wrong.

I was extremely disappointed with this supposed guide to Bilbao. The small amount of information available was useful, however there were many pages of photographs of hotels (none required as we had already booked our acoomodation), only one small foldout map with small print, and a lot of irrelevant information about places outside Bilbao. Finally, about one quarter of the book was taken up with blank pages for you to make your own notes. I know it was cheap, but it was a waste of £5.

I was a dissappointed with this book.

There was lots of infomation about hotels - but I had already booked a hotel and it wasn't one of these! lots of infomation about a few, expensive resturants - but I am vegetarian and none of the resturants featured catered for them (even if I could have afforded them!).

The rest of the infomation was pretty basic, overstated or obvious!

Sadly, this was coupled with a pretty rubbish street map, and no useful infomation on public transport.

Not much good - won't be purchacing another from this range.

Barely the basics 23 Sep 2008

Having never purchased a Wallpaper guide, I didn't exactly know what I was going to receive. In the end, I suppose it delivers what is inferred: a brief guide at a low price.

However, what is in the guide is limited at best. I traveled to Bilbao on business, but not for a large conference or a structured stay where things would be planned by others. The book has a few nice glossy pictures and some slim restaurant recommendations, but the book only served the purpose for having some information while a much better guide was being republished (Cardogan Bilbao and the Basque Lands).

Even at the price, I would only recommend this book if you were a guidebook junkie who is not only well travelled, but a guidebook collector.
