"Wallflower", Deborah Turbeville's masterpiece, is also her breakthrough publicaton. This carefully structured and presented book featuring many of the stunning photographs with which she made her name, including the US Vogue "public bath house series" from 1975 also includes many side projects with her favourite models, including Mary Martz. Famed for her fashion photography since 1968 in leading magazines such as Nova (e.g. December 1973) when this former editor finally took up her place behind the camera, "Wallflower" is her full scale debut book following earlier pamphlets such as "Maquillage". The black and white work in particular combines increadible printing techniques from her long-time collaborator and printer Sharon Schuster, showing the perfected art of the "distressed print". If you are prepared to take time to think, don't be surprised to find yourself feeling ever more uncomfortable as the mystery and loneliness pervading many of these group poses starts to show itself having become resident in your thoughts during those days and months after first viewing. A must have (it took me years to find my own copy but it was one of my best ever purchases).
