Product Description

Product Description
Beth flew the coop as soon as she could, making a life for herself and her daughter in London. James, her dutiful brother, stayed in Dublin, raising a family not far from their mother, Alice. Now Alice is dying and Beth has returned to the shabby grandeur of her childhood home to keep vigil by her bedside. Unable to speak, the only way Alice feels she can bridge the gap of understanding between her and Beth is to write to her and seek reconciliation. Set during the last days of Alice's life, this is also an extraordinary preceptive novel about childhood and growing old. 'A hugely gratifying book; something to feed the spirit again and again' - "Irish Independent". 'Dunne's writing is beautifully understated' - "She". '"The Walled Garden" is that great rarity: a flawless novel' - "Express".

About the Author
Catherine Dunne was born in Dublin in 1954. She studied English and Spanish at Trinity College and went on to teach. Her first novel, 'In the Beginning', was published in 1977.

4.0 out of 5 stars MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS., 21 Mar 2004
By Val De Beer "Val De Beer" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
It's a pity that on the cover of the Picador edition of this novel is written - "The Walled Garden" is that great rarity: a flawless novel."
It's too extravagant a claim for a book, which although it has a clever plot, the discovery by her daughter of a mother's letters to her, as she sits by her dying mother's bed, it lacks the tension which should have existed between the two generations of women.
It began well enough with a near-accident between the daughter Beth, and a lorry, because Beth is so stressed about her mother's welfare, but to me, it seemed to deteriorate as it went along.
If the author had been able to paint a very convincing picture of the difficulties which are prevalent between mothers and daughters, and if the character of the brother had not been so flat (he seemed like a character called "Good" from a Morality Play of the Middle Ages), maybe we could have felt the familial problems more realistically.
As it was, it was a good story and it was enjoyable and interesting but it seemed rather bland at times, that's all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family relationships, 19 Feb 2001
By A Customer
If you enjoy novels about family relationships, especially Mother/daughter, you'll be glad you found this one. This book made me pleased that I have grown closer to my mother during the last decade. However, it wasn't just that, that made it a comfortable read. It is quite atmospheric. The descriptions of the family house - the home - are very tangiable and easy to visualise and almost 'feel'. We also get the mother's past from her point of view as well as the present from the daughter's. This makes you realise what damage can be done in a moment, by a word or a disapproving look, and how we allow principles and pride, in relationships, to deny us happiness. We also get to share the mother's experience of her 'funny turns' as each small stroke builds to the one that sends her into a coma. This is dealt with sympathetically giving one an insight into how unnerving and confusing this must be. The sense of urgency to heal emotional wounds before time runs out permiates the story. Not wishing to give away the ending only allows me to say that this is not sentimentally unrealistic or too shallow either, leaving the reader to think about all the characters and what will happen after the novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great novel..., 21 Oct 2000
By A Customer
"The Walled Garden" is the story of a woman who reconciles herself with her past at the time of her mother's death. It is a poignant, beautifully told novel. Set in the Dublin suburbs, it depicts the mother-daughter relationship with precision and conviction, while also painting an accurate, interesting picture of Irish life from the 1950s to the present.A tender but unsentimental story.
