I've long been a fan of the Wallander series - both on TV and then the books - so having recently read what I thought would be the final book, as he descends into the fog of Alzheimer's Disease, I was a little surprised to see this advertised.
Anyway I thought I'd give it a go as I anticipated it would at least be on a par with the others. Unfortunately it wasn't. Have you ever seen a "prequel" to a favourite TV series or film and thought that it has been a real let down? Sometimes you wonder why authors don't just leave things as they are, but I guess there is just a natural tendency to capitalise on anything that' s been a success.

The book obviously gives a flavour of Wallander's early career in the Police Force, and of course there is that fractious relationship he has with his father, which is a background theme to all the books; and not to mention the union with his wife Mona who we learn in the fullness of time becomes the mother of his only child and daughter, Linda. The story certainly lacks the depth and intrigue central to most of the other books, and I found it somewhat boring - Wallander as a young police constable is drawn into investigating the death of an older man, who he recognises as a neighbour in the block of flats where he is living at the time.

There is little we learn about Wallander and his early life that we haven't already gleaned from other books in the series. I would always have bought this book, purely on the basis that I am a fan, but my recommendation is to read it on that basis alone and don't expect a page turner!

1.0 out of 5 stars Even the author was bored! 19 Sep 2014

I've enjoyed the TV series, but this was very disappointing. It was going quite well then it seemed as if the author got completely fed-up with the process and just told us the ending without bothering to show how it got there. The number of pages should have warned me but I didn't notice. It was just silly!
I may try another some time just because the TV series was so much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars good story 28 Aug 2014

Inexperienced Wallander stumbles through a case that starts in the flat next to his. Wallander's doggedness is apparent. His relationship with Mona is developing. Good tale.

I have watched the TV version of Wallander and was not sure what to expect from the books. Enjoyed this very much and will be buying more. Not bought any of the Kindle singles before as not sure about value for money but this certainly was.

3.0 out of 5 stars Medium sort of Wallander 31 Aug 2014

This novelette was too long for its content but this is a mark of the author. It made for a pleasant read and, in its way, was enjoyable.

It is difficult to give an impartial assessment of this - I have long been an enthusiast for the Wallander series. I can only say I found this well up to the standard of earlier novels. Wallander is just an ordinary policeman in this and is drawn in only because the apparent suicide occurs in an apartment next to his. The only criticism one might make is that it is fairly short - a novella rather than a novel; but I found it entirely satisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Intriguing Days 16 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you enjoy the Wallander novels , this is an effective addition. Psychologically interesting, not just in terms of the crime case explored but also in the development of Wallander's character and background, especially his tense, torn and often frustrating relationship with his father. Satisfyingly plotted, this is an enjoyable read where Wallander's willingness to break out of police set boundaries in order to solve a crime is established.
