5.0 out of 5 stars A fitting end for the detective 18 Aug 2014

I had watched the final episodes on BBC 4 and watching Kirster Henrikssons playing Wallanders slow decent into dementia was very emotional. The actress who plays his daughter Linda was excellent - it must have been very difficult to take on the role after the death of the previous actress. She and her father have at last formed a warm relationship. This had completed my Wallander collection, so I now hav episodes 1 - 32. I will certainly miss the character and the actor who gives the role far more depth of character than the awful Kenneth Brannagh interpretation.

Krister Henriksson appears once again in a further six stories based upon the characters created by author Henning Mankell. The six first class stories here conclude the Krister Henriksson series and consist of
Den orolige mannen (The Troubled Man)
Försvunnen (Missing)
Sveket (The Betrayal)
Saknaden (The Loss)
Mordbrännaren (The Arsonist)
Sorgfågeln (The Sad Bird)
All six stories gained around a million viewers each when broadcast on BBC Four in summer 2014 and achieved the highest ratings of all Wallander series screened by the channel.
Charlotta Jonsson also stars as Kurt's daughter Linda and there are various guest stars including Stina Ekblad as Karin Linder.
As with many quality Scandinavian series, the third outing always seems to be the final (The Killing, Borgen). You may like one of these three other Nordic series to see you through the summer - Norway's Varg Veum - The complete collection 12 DVDs, Denmark's Krøniken Complete Series (Better Times) Official Danish release with English subtitles starring Stina Ekblad and another Swedish cop series Arne Dahl Complete Series 1 DVD. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The final series 11 Jun 2014
Well, I presume the final series with Krister Henriksson in the title role. Henriksson is certainly the best Wallander and will be sadly missed.

As the series progresses we begin to see his demise into forgetfulness and presumably the onset of dementia and yet at 64 (as he reminds us in episode 3) he is still solving crimes.

Surrounded by a strong cast Wallander this series still knocks spots of most other detective series and certainly most imports from the States. Part of the original Nordic Noir and possibly pre-dating most of it buy and watch with complete confidence.

I will miss Krister/Kurt - and so will you.

4.0 out of 5 stars oh there is more! 1 Jun 2014
Watching these on iPlayer. Was initially worried he was going a bit Bergerac, but no, seems to be holding steady with a similar quality and atmosphere to the last few seasons.

EDITED - These episodes are getting to the level of the best in the series. New challenges for Kurt keep his story interesting. I find the fact that Martinsson and Svartman have aged (without being recast) funny to watch, although they have had little to do so far. As the episodes progress the new Linda has more interaction with Kurt the return of the character makes more sense. It is hard not to compare the two Linda's, but I think these episodes are best enjoyed by trying not to do that.

I will be pleased to have this box set on my shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wallander's Swansong 16 Sep 2014

This was - sadly - the very last series and it did not disappoint. Each episode brought new aspects on crime, human failure and human greatness. The Scandinavian sparseness, bleakness, the ability of the characters to admit to their failings, to their feelings created a unique style that only the original Wallander can give you.
