The second series of "Wallander", starring Krister Henriksson, had much to live up to. Not only was the first series of outstanding quality, the production had to address the tragic loss of Johanna Sallstrom who played Linda and the death (fictional this time) of the character played by Ola Rapace. (Incidentally, Ola Rapace's wife, Noomi, stars in "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", currently in cinemas and now out on DVD).
However, not only did the second series maintain the high quality of the original, in a number of ways it enriched and deepened the emotional and dramatic elements underpinning the production. Henriksson's portrayal of the detective subtly extended both the character of Wallander himself: moody, lonely and frequently irritable, but made him wonderfully human and sympathetic. In addition, the supporting team of actors, some quite new to the series and others well-known from the first series, were provided with stories and dialogue that also gave "Wallander" a depth and richness which contributed to its outstanding quality.
Henriksson has said he will make no more Wallander. That is a pity but this distinguished actor has every right to bow out. His achievement, and the work of his colleagues both in front of the camera and behind it, has throughout created memorable and moving television.
