Product Description

Acclaimed 1988 Made-for-Tv Movie starring Tony Danza (She's Out of Control; Tv's - Taxi; Who's the Boss?) as an American GI stationed in Berlin in 1961 who witnesses first hand what it means to ordinary German people when the Berlin Wall is erected dividing their city and in his case preventing his German girlfriend from crossing over to the American side to be with him. Powerfully acted by the entire cast which includes veteran comedy star Sid Caesar (It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World), David McCallum (The Great Escape; Tv's - The Men from U.N.C.L.E; Sapphire and Steel), Neil Dickson (Biggles) & Geraldine James (Tv's - The Jewel in the Crown), it's a moving story which besides being very enjoyable is also a excellent reminder of what life was like both for the Germans who were forcibly shut away from the West by the sudden emergence of the Wall, but also what it was like for the American soldiers who had to watch helplessly as the East German guards brutally dealt with any German who tried to escape.

Wall of Tyranny, a.k.a. Freedom Fighter, was a TV movie based on facts surrounding the Berlin Wall. Apparently, when it was shown in the USA, it topped the television ratings with over 30 million people tuning in. I can see why that is because I was pretty impressed with this programme, produced in 1988 by HTV in association with Columbia Pictures Television. As it was an HTV production, I'm hoping that Network can secure the rights to this programme for a DVD release at some stage in the future.
According to the IMDb, this programme was listed as Freedom Fighter, which I found was the American title (the IMDb is an American website, so it probably would have put the American title of the programme). The British Film Institute (BFI), however, have it down as Wall of Tyranny, which I am assuming is the British title of the show. When watching the programme on the video, in the opening credits it comes up with the UK title "Wall of Tyranny", rather than the American title "Freedom Fighter" (the video having been released in the UK). This programme featured a fine cast of actors such as David McCallum, Bob Sherman, David Robb, and of course not forgetting Tony Danza as G.I. Vic Ross. Very highly recommended.
