I was at Potsdamer Platz 13 years ago, I bought the VHS but I rarely watch it. This DVD makes it easy to dip into the show, great menus with orchestral and ambient extracts. The sound mix by Nick Griffiths and Nigel Jopson is really the best concert sound I have ever heard, and the Wall show could have been made for surround sound, it's a real pleasure to listen to on my home theatre system. There's some great performances, in particular from Brian Adams and Joni Mitchell. Extras include an interesting documentary about war-torn Berlin, and how the wall came to be built. There's also some professionally put together interviews with Roger Waters, designer Jonathan Park, artist Gerald Scarfe and others - R. Waters tells about artists who wouldn't do the show and what went wrong on the night (a power cut - the artists stayed til 3 am to re-record some parts - I never knew, just wondered how the VHS was completed ... i'd already left on the show night!)

This is, to my knowledge, the only film of a "live" performance of The Wall. As such it is definitely a worthwhile buy for Floyd fans who want to see how the original concert was staged.

As a spectacle it is a great event, and really captures the dramatic narrative of the story.

As a musical performance though it doesn't come close to the original Floyd shows. In the absence of Gilmour and co many of the songs feature special guests. Some fit in (Bryan Adams, Paul Carrack) but some don't (Sinead O'Connor, The Band), and I felt these moments really took the edge off the show. You also can't substitute Gilmour's guitar work, which I missed on Comfortably Numb in particular.

The camera work is a bit ropey in some places but overall this is well worth the money for occassional viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roger Waters: The Wall - Live in Berlin 5 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
We saw Pink Floyd perform the Wall in Dortmund in 1982 - it was by far the best live concernt I have seen - before or since. I bought the Wall - Live in Berlin for my husband at Christmas for his new home cinema. We have watched it now dozens of times and thank our lucky stars our neighbours put up with the aging rockers with music bouncing off the walls and converted them and tons of friends much younger than us to Floyd music. With Bryan Adams, Van Morrison, Cindy Lauper et al this is the most amazing concert with world class mucicians and performers. I could go on about it for hours. My only regret is I was not there to see it live and envy anyone that was.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy unless you have an SACD capable player
Bought this, but it won't play in a standard cd player or off of a computer. Apparently, it's a super audio cd (SACD) which means you need a special machine to play it on. Read more
