Product Description

Product Description

"Walking Weekends Peak District" features 24 circular walks from 12 villages throughout the Peak District, with two walks of varying lengths from each village - ideal for a weekend break. Mark Reid has combined his knowledge of the villages, pubs and footpaths of the Peak District to create this new and unique book. Many people enjoy going away for a weekend staying at a traditional country pub and then using the pub as a base from which to explore the surrounding countryside on foot. This new guidebook makes this weekend away experience a whole lot easier with details of where to stay, local inns, background information and historical points of interest. Then, there are 24 classic walks to choose from, with 2 detailed routes of varying lengths from each of the 12 featured villages thorughout the Peak District. Explore the windswept heather moors or the challenging terrain of Kinder Scout in the Dark Peak; take an exhilerating stroll along the top of the eastern edges, including Stanage Edge, Froggatt Edge or Calver Edge; meander through the deep limestone valleys of the White Peak such as Wolfscote Dale, Lathkill Dale or Monk's Dale. Call into unspoilt, hidden pubs along the way such as the Red Lion at Litton, Quiet Woman at Earl Sterndale, Devonshire Arms at Pilsley or the Flying Childers at Stanton. Featured villages include: Bakewell, Baslow, Castleton, Edale, Eyam, Hartington, Hathersage, Hayfield, Longnor, Tideswell, Wetton, Youlgrave.

About the Author

Mark Reid was born in Lancashire but moved to North Yorkshire at the age of six where he has lived ever since. Mark first fell in love with the countryside of the North of England, in particular the Yorkshire Dales, when he was 16 after visiting Reeth in Swaledale; he has since walked extensively in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, North Pennines, Peak District and Northumberland. Mark studied Geography at the University of Lancaster after which he worked for various large breweries as an Area Manager. Work began on his first book, The Inn Way...to the Yorkshire Dales, in his spare time in 1991 and Mark gave up his job to concentrate on writing following the publication of this book in 1997. There are now five books in The Inn Way...series, with work progressing on the 6th book 'The Inn Way... to the Peak District'. Mark writes regular articles concerning walking and the Outdoors for several newspapers and magazines.

I have completed just over half the routes in the book, and can honestly say that I have enjoyed every single one. I am lucky enough to live in the Peak so the weekend layout (Saturday/Sunday walks) hasn't been applicable, but I am sure that hikers visiting for a long weekend would find this very helpful. I also like the way that the walks are circular and ordered by starting point (ie Bakewell, Eyam etc). This really helps to 'centre' the experience.

My only criticism regards the format of the book. One thing I love about the Cicerone Guides is that they can be easily carried in a pocket and have a waterproof PVC jacket. Our book hasn't stood up very well to rainy Derbyshire weather and we've had to resort to photocopying pages to take with us. Saying that though, I would buy other books by Mark Reid, despite this one minor quibble.

Mark Reid should be complimented for such wonderfully accurate walks. I did 2 of his walks this past weekend and even I couldn't go wrong. They were accurate stile for stile, gate for gate. It was so reassuring to me as someone unaccustomed to the Peak District in any depth and as a lone walker. I couldn't fault it.
