4.0 out of 5 stars Brief bites of entertaining TV history 8 April 2014
This is an enjoyable and informative series of TV programmes which explores the landscape and history of the UK, centred around the affable TonyR who stomps onwards through the worst that the British weather can throw at him, and even appears to be enjoying himself.

Image a mix of Julia Bradbury's hiking series and Michael Portillo's Great Railways (minus the trains...) and you've just about got it. TonyR is obviously less of a mountaineer than Julia so does rather less of the adventurous scrambling than she does -- which is rather reassuring, in fact. There's less emphasis on the merits of the route and the pathways as walks, as such, and much more time devoted to the history of the surrounding landscape. I guess the clue is in the title...
These episodes cover a diverse range of locations, from the Peak District to Stonehenge, Dorset to the South Downs, the Lake District and Cornish covers, the Highlands, Northumbria, Norfolk and Leeds and Liverpool. You'll notice that this is mainly England -- very little in the way of Scotland or Wales in this series.
Various local historians and colourful characters meet Tony along the way to add texture to the historical overview which, depending on the location, goes back as far as the Stone Age. There's quite a bit about the impact of the industrial revolution and, as usual, Cornwall's story is reduced to little more than smuggling. The WW2 episode, set along the south coast, was rather more imaginative and revealed some interesting snippets I hadn't previously known much about.

Overall, very accessible and entertaining. An entirely painless way to absorb information, and some lovely photography of some still-unspoiled scenery and stunning landscapes. Definitely better on DVD than when broadcast, without those pesky ad breaks...
