2.0 out of 5 stars A useful book taking you to the hidden parts of Provence, 1 Oct 2001
This review is from: Walking in Provence (Cicerone Guide) (Paperback)
An interesting book taking the walker to the more remote parts of Provence. However the average walker, ie the 10 mile a day weekend walker, should read the walks with care as the author is obviously an advanced walker and underestimates the average rambler's capabilities. Her idea of an easy walk with a negligible climb is actually very strenuous and frequently takes in quite steep climbs and descents. Her use of English grammar also causes problems as some directions could be read in several different ways...... The lack of signs in the French countryside too does not help, making unclear directions in the book even worse. Several walks had us going round in circles before reading a sentence in another way, adding some punctuation to critical parts.... However, apart from that, the book is full of local history and facts and makes an enjoyable read in itself. The walks take in areas which the ordinary tourist probably wouldn't find and the views from the walks in the area we stayed in were fantastic and more than made up for the long slogs up hill which the author says may be a bit strenuous!

3.0 out of 5 stars Rewarding, 11 Sep 2002
By
R J Amlot (Putney, London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Walking in Provence (Cicerone Guide) (Paperback)
Having just returned from a 2 week holiday in Provence, I have to say that the book provided an excellent selection of walks - offering the chance to more fully immerse yourself in this beautiful part of the world.

Both myself and my partner did 8 of the suggested walks and throughly enjoyed all of them. I am not a dedicated rambler by any stretch of the imagination and did question the descriptions of some of the walks as being either 'easy' or 'limited height gain'. Nonetheless it never took longer than her suggested times for completing the walks and there was a sense of accomplishment at the end! I would agree with the previous review that some of the descriptions were slightly lacking BUT when this did occur a little bit of faith went a long way and Route markings are very clear on the French paths giving suitable reassurance as we made our way.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book as it opened up a whole new side of Provence for us and provided a welcome relief to crowded Villages on market days.
