Review

"'The best way to become intimate with any city is to walk... What you need is not just a nose for geography but an X-ray eye with which to see behind the shop fronts and hotel facades. Gilles Desmons' admirable book Walking Paris is the next best thing.' FINANCIAL TIMES" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

This book takes you on a tour of the French capital, providing the keys with which to unlock some of the city's most fascinating secrets. The Ile de la Cite is Paris's historic centre from which it has grown outwards in a series of concentric circles, layers of history which begin with the Roman Arena and continue through the ages to the very contemporary Louvre pyramid. Acting as a personal guide to the most attractive quarters of the city, the author leads you along the boulevards and avenues of Paris, pointing out famous sights and revealing more unusual corners and hidden delights. Each walk is accompanied by detailed information on the historical background of the places passed en route, as well as interesting anecdotes and recommended restaurants and cafes. Clear maps show the exact location of significant landmarks and buildings, art galleries and museums, churches, parks and gardens, many of which are illustrated in full-colour photographs. In 30 original walks nearly 100 miles of Parisian landscape is unveiled.

In an era when most guidebooks seem to be produced by computers, it was most refreshing to come across one where the author has clearly taken every step himself. Only with his authority could one dare enter the courtyards he suggests, or push open gate doors that otherwise look threatening closed. One has to wonder at the diversity of his knowledge and descriptive powers; he is as useful a companion in the wide open spaces around the Louvre as in Pere Lachaise Cemetery or in the winding streets of Montmartre. The human weaknesses that took place behind so many walls also do not escape the author's attention. This is Paris truly revealed!Walking Paris

Excellent 10 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
The walks give a wonderful insight of bits of Paris that you might otherwise never come across. They generally avoid the (noisy, busy) main roads and leaad you through interesting alleys, arcades, along canals etc. Instructions are clear, and the author includes enough history to understand what you are looking at, but doesn't overload it. The walks have provided us with days of fascinated discovery.

Disappointing 17 May 2010
Format:Paperback
The so-called highlights in the walking paths were very disappointing. This book is also very wordy with few pictures. We tried the Beaubourg-Chatelet walk on Saturday and the streets recommended were less than normal. We couldnt understand why those routes were picked. In short, very disappointing.
