I recently bought this album after seeing Walking Papers opening for Whitesnake in brussels. I thought the show was great. A very good balance of groovy funk rock with a twist of Bowie (Ziggy/ Aladdin era) , The Cult and various other influences. The singer/ guitarist was very convincing in both his attitude and playing/ singing.
Needless to say that I was surprised to witness Duff McKagan on bass in a project that's quite far from his usual grounds (Duff appears on the album as a guest on a few tracks).

The album lacks a bit of the live rawness and doesn't quite translate all the power of the gig, but on the other hand, gives way to subtle arrangements and good melodies. Even more so than on stage, WP definitly showcases a nice palet of 70's influences, but also some clear nods to "newer" bands like U2, Muse or (again) The Cult.

Definitly a great band to discover, if you like steady, groovy, slighlty artsy/fartsy rock'n' roll with an edge.

Here's a collection of guys who really know how to play.
I'd say it was hard rock/blues, but don't expect Guns n' Roses, and when I say that I'm being complimentary, and there are quite a few interesting, slow moody numbers.

I love the words and the way the songs tell stories and evoke places, in one a guy gets into all kinds of trouble with the cops due to some lady of the night, in another he's trying to get to sleep in bed with a girl next to him that he can't touch (Capital T). I also like the general atmosphere, and especially the guy's voice. Someone said Tom Waits, I think he's better. Sometimes Tom Waits's voice sounds a bit forced, whereas here we have a voice that can switch seamlessly from a normal, clean kind of tenor voice to pure gravel.

Occasionally they just let rip, and they really mean it, like in Capital T.

Great guitar solos, good riffs, the bass is really competent and incredibly solid (nice production values here) and great drumming. What more could you want?

I love this cool, languid rock album. Lyrical stories with a twisted edge, great rhythm section! Invest, I think it will become an alternative rock Classic.

Bought this on the strength of reviws on Classic Rock magazine..
Glad I did, really good.
Quite gutsy rock to melodic harmonies.
Have to listen to it a few times before it grew on me but now its never off the car player!

Awesome; a real mix of styles. For example Already Dead sounds like The XX whereas Red Envelopes is a proper stomping rock song rock song which reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age.
Quality album! Buy it!

Ok, I did buy this as Duff McKagan was in it. Maybe I should have gone for his band Loaded for something more rockier.

It's a good album, don't get me wrong, just parts of it are a bit like Mad Season, and that was never my cup of tea. It does get better and better with each listen, but it's not the type of album I expected from an ex Gunner.

There are some blinding tracks on it, but it's not an album with stand out singles for me, just an album that deserves to be played in its entirety in one sitting.
