Product Description

Product Description

This guide focuses on parks, squares and gardens in and around central London. Each of the 25 entries consists of a scene-setting historical and descriptive introduction, followed by a guided walk and detailed information on highlights encountered en route. Each entry also has a map, showing, in a second colour, the route of the walk and places of interest, such as plantings, statuary and architectural features. At the back of the book are synopses of 20 parks and gardens associated with those described in the main entries. In addition, there are lists of opening times of museums, houses and gardens.

An excellent book 30 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I have used this book for 7 of the walks in it and found it to be easy to use, full of interesting information and I am looking forward to the other walks.

What else can I say? I have no connection with the author, publisher etc.

I have used this book a few times now, and it's extremely useful. Firstly, it's made me go and look at landscapes I wouldn't have considered before, like Victoria Embankment Gardens. Secondly, it's jam-packed with useful facts about sculptures and trees along the way.

However, I find it frustrating that the maps aren't more accurate; I have often found myself backtracking, even in London parks I thought I knew my way around.

Really worth having, though.

By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Escape the hurly burly of Central London into one of her green havens. This is a little treasure of a book, exploring London's fascinating parks and gardens. Enter 25 peaceful green spaces in the capital city. This updated version includes information on parks and gardens, garden designers and gives the introduction dates of some key plant species. It includes maps, photos and key features of each garden. In addition there are notes on transport, admission, refreshment and seasonal features of each garden. There is also a useful time guide for each garden, although larger gardens such as Kew can be easily divided into two or more trips. An excellent guide to London's major parks and gardens. Roger Tagholm has updated this books as Geoffrey Young sadly passed away in 2001. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
