5.0 out of 5 stars Get walking! 12 May 2012
By Jan
Everybody should walk more and this book will encourage you do just that. The 30 walks included are quite varied and they will take you to all parts of London and even further (e.g. Windsor and Eton, Richmond and Hampton Court). Andrew Duncan includes all the practical information you need, i.e. maps, distances and an estimation of the length of time each walk will take, but he also includes lots of interesting details to look out for as you walk, snippets of relevant history and great places to stop for a drink or a sandwich and a cup of tea. The book is illustrated with beautiful photos of places you should definitely look out for on your way - Jacob Epstein's wonderful Madonna and Child which is fixed to an arch just off Cavendish Square and the Triton fountain in Regents Park, for example.

The book is well indexed and the "Historical background" section is informative and will be especially helpful to anyone not entirely sure who the Adam brothers were or whether King William IV came before or after all the Georges.

I think this book is a great guide to our capital. However well you know London, I think you will find many facts and places you didn't know if pick up this book and walk.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable selection of walks 3 Dec 2011
Andrew Duncan does a good line in walking guides and this is an excellent introduction to London covering the mainstream sights, but also some back streets and secret corners. There aren't many cities with a St-Andrew-By-The-Wardrobe church and this book is a great way to get out and see that, and a wide variety of what else London has to offer.

Easy to follow, with plenty of interest to read about what is to be seen. The walks are generally 2 - 4 miles long and each has a simple map to help. A paperback, but the binding is stitched so it won't fall apart if you take it with you.

If you enjoy this, there are other books by the author in the same style that are well worth getting, but note that his "Favourite London Walks" is entirely a compilation with most, but not all, of the ones in this book plus some taken from his other books.

We're very pleased with this book, and have ticked two walks off in the first fortnight. It was a pleasure to be transported from point to point whilst soaking up the atmosphere created by the well-constructed commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A couple of hours to spare? Then this is ideal 17 Aug 2011
This is a really good book to see sights in London that maybe you never knew existed. I did the Mayfair walk and loved discovering new places to shop, eat and just find out what famous people had been born, lived or died in some of the beautiful buildings. Cant wait to go to London again to do another walk - really would recommend this book. A walk costs nothing and London is expensive so it makes a wonderful change not to have to spend all the time to entertain oneself.
