Product Description

Product Description

Roger Redfern describes the timeless quality of the Western Isles of Scotland. Although geographically close together, each island has its own distinctive character. Take, for instance, the cultivated fields and mild air of Tiree, the bleak profiles of Coll and South Uist, or the jagged mountain skylines of Rhum and the Cuillins of Skye. Today, you can visit several of the islands by regular short flights from Glasgow, you can drive across the Skye Bridge, or you can savour the sea views and feeling of remoteness by taking the ferry - though not, now, quite the risky affair it was in the 30s when, 'by the help of God', the Hebridean boatman would guide you to your destination after several uncomfortable hours at sea! Whatever your method of travel, be warned that your visit will probably be the first of many, such is the very special charm of these islands and their people. As well as a general description of the island in question, each chapter includes suggestions for walking routes which take full advantage of the scenery on offer. Sketch maps and photographs accompany the text.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Cicerone's usual high standards, 17 April 2009

This review is from: Walking in the Hebrides (Cicerone Guide) (Paperback)
This book is a huge disappointment to me. The maps are crude and the route descriptions inadequate. For anyone planning a hiking trip to the Hebrides this will offer some vague ideas of routes but very little else of real benefit. Such a shame as Cicerone guides are normally so much more helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great overview of walking in the Hebrides, 27 Jan 2011
This review is from: Walking in the Hebrides (Cicerone Guide) (Paperback)
I take the previous reviewer's point about the lack of detailed maps and routes in Roger Redfern's guidebook, but I would counter that Walking in the Hebrides provides a fine overview of the region and is a great resource for those seeking ideas about where to walk in the islands. The routes Mr Redfern describes take the form of personal accounts full of insightful observations and suffused with a real warmth for the islands he describes.

I found Walking in the Hebrides a source of inspiration, so much so that I went off and researched my own more detailed guidebook to the Southern Hebrides for Cicerone who also publish detailed guides to most of the Hebridean islands.

The Hebrides are a wonderful and diverse region and once visited, they tend to call you back again and again. If you've never been and are thinking of embarking on a walking holiday, Roger Redfern's book is a fine introduction to walking among some of the finest landscapes in the British Isles.
