Product Description

Product Description

Outside the Chamonix region few books have been written in English concerning the Haute Savoie and the innumerable walking possibilities, which range from the gentle pre-Alps south of Lake Geneva in the Chablais, to the majestic peaks in the Faucigny, Haut Giffre and Lake Annecy regions. "Walking in the Haute Savoie" is also a guidebook giving historical background and descriptions of the different areas the walks start from, plus additional information regarding the towns and villages which can be used as a centre. 61 walks are described. There are chapters concerning how to get there, maps, equipment, walk explanations, sign posting, flora and fauna.

About the Author

Janette Norton has lived in France (near Geneva) for over 30 years with her physicist husband, Alan, raising four children and working in the marketing field. Her love of mountain walking dates from the time she was a guide in her twenties, and the proximity of the Alps and Jura to her home has enabled her to continue her passion. Now her family has grown up, she has branched out to explore other areas of France. Other Cicerone books by the author: Walking in the Haute Savoie Walking in Provence

5.0 out of 5 stars Walking in the Haute Savoie by Janette Norton, 13 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I bought this book 4 years ago, and used it on a week's walking holiday. My son liked it so much he kept it, and I had to buy another copy. Janette Norton has an extensive knowledge of the area, and an appreciation for the spectacular scenery.
Her walks are varied, and graded, and the descriptions exactly describe the difficulty. Over a period of a few years, I have walked about three quarters of the walks in the book, and there has not been a walk that was not superb, and varied. They range from approx 3 hours to 6 hours walking time, with 1000 metres of height gain, to more gentle walks. Most of the walks are day walks, are easy to follow, and are based on a circuit from a suitable parking area. There are some fairly difficult walks for those who enjoy a little scrambling, and have a head for heights. I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent and informative introduction to the best walking in the area.
