Don't judge the book by its cover!, 24 July 2011
This review is from: Walking in the Haute Savoie: South: Book 2: Annecy-Chamonix (Faucigny/Haut Giffre, Aravais/Borne): South (Between Annecy and Chamonix): Book 2 (south) (Cicerone Mountain Walking) (Paperback)
This book does seem to provide information that you would require - for example, where the walk is located, how long it might take (doesn't suggest distance though), how difficult it is. It then goes on to tell you where to park, and then step by step notes guiding you along the walk. This would all seem to be just what you'd need.
We are both fit, healthy and sporty adults - used to fairly regular walking - and were wearing good walking boots, waterproof jackets etc. Admittedly the area had experienced rain on several days previous, and it was raining for the duration of our walk. Because of the rain, and recovery from a recent illness, we decided to do the 'easy' walk located in our region (the walk at Talloires). This walk is not easy, is not suitable for children, and is definitely not one to do in the rain or when it has been raining recently. We both fell twice because it was so slippery/muddy and steep underfoot, and consequently ended up very muddy indeed, although fortunately (and perhaps amazingly) unhurt.
If this was one of the few 'easy' walks in the book, we would be very apprehensive about attempting anything more difficult. If this book is updated/re-printed I would suggest a note to avoid doing this particualr walk on a wet day would be a good idea, and that it is only suitable for adults (not children) who are capable of walking on varied terrain, with suitable footwear - and definitely choose dry conditions! (Even then it won't be 'easy'!).
