Product Description

Product Description

Guide to 28 multi-day walks and treks in the Dolomites, Italy, Europe. This guide leads you through breathtaking alpine scenery flanked by well-graded paths and excellent mountain refuges that verge on hotels, easily accessible from the extensive network of public transport from major towns and travel hubs, such as Venice, Verona, Munich and Innsbruck. Any one of these fabulous multi-day walks makes for a memorable holiday in Italy's breathtaking Dolomite mountains. The author weaves the best of her 20-year experience and knowledge of this spectacular region into an original selection of itineraries on foot across each Dolomite group. Many walks follow mule-tracks constructed by troops during the First World War, when Italy fought Austria for possession of crazy summits and tunnels were hewn through impossible mountain-sides. The highlights are emphasised, and the routes are furnished with fascinating explanations of wildlife and flowers. Everything, from a stroll through woods and meadows to family routes, steep rocky zigzag passages and hands-on clambers, is covered. This full-colour revised edition has a wealth of inspiring photos, detailed maps, myriad new routes and heaps of practical help on travelling, sleeping and eating.

Gillian Price's book guided us very sensibly around the Dolomites last summer, and in terms of description of routes and estimation of difficulty it would be hard to fault it. Her coverage of flora and fauna was also excellent. Don't expect to be too thrilled by it, though; the author leaves you to discover the real beauty of the area for yourself, as the pages do not exactly brim with mouth watering descriptions. Also, hostels in the Dolomites vary from the basic and colourful to the commercial/industrial (although with nice showers)and the book does not give much indication of individual hostel character.

In summary, it's a bit lacking in warmth and human detail, but it delivers what it promises: a very efficient guide to walking in the dolomites, which gives accurate descriptions of the routes involved, and of their length and difficulty.

Excellent Guidebook 14 Feb 2007
By gabhla
Format:Paperback
I've used this book on 2 trips I organised to the Dolomites, and found it to be excellent, lots of walks, many of which can be completed in a day.

If you planning a trip, it's a must buy. You need to buy the Tabacco maps mentioned at the start of each walk, in order to get the most from the book.

Make sure you a buy a good map.... 8 Aug 2009
By Jonathan Bradley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I just came back from a trip to the Dolomites and luckily I had a friend who had some German hiking books as well. This book has some serious limitations.
1) There is no index so if you are looking for a specific city or area to start or end a hike you have to scour the the book to find anything. The publisher took the cheap way out and used the final pages for ads instead of an index. Sorry but I'm spoiled by other guide books.
2) They use hand drawn maps so you have no idea about elevation or topography. The general map that contains all of hikes is also hand drawn so you MUST have a good map of the area. No topo maps are provided in the book so get a good map or you'll be sorry. I like to use guide books as starting points and make up my own hikes as well and this book is no help in that department, you have to have a good map to use in conjunction with this book.
3) The author uses bizarre descriptions so read between the lines. When she writes that you will be hiking on a "giddy ridge" that means there is a sheer drop on one side. If she writes that you need to use your hands that means you have to do some climbing.
4) Poor organization. To save costs the publisher combined maps of some hikes so the information that you need isn't always readily available. Again, I'm spoiled by the other great guides out there.

If you can read German, Italian or French stay clear of this book, there are better titles out there-skip this one and move on. If you only understand English and you plan on hiking you still have to buy this book because there is nothing else out there. Pretend it's 1965 when this book would be the top of the line.

Hiking Guide for the Dolomites 1 April 2010
By Long time Mac user - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A good reference to plan a trip and seems to be quite usable while taking the hikes. I wish there would be a better indication where the hike can be shortened utilizing the many cable car/chair lifts in the area
Good planning guide! 27 Nov 2011

Although I haven't had occasion to actually use this guidebook "in the field," I believe that it will be very useful in helping me plan an upcoming trip to the Dolomites. The volume is pocket-size, and thereby portable.

The illustrations are full-color and the printing job nicely executed. There is quite a bit of useful information at the beginning that is directed to rank beginners in mountain walking; this is obviously useful to some. There are also many good secondary references for obtaining additional local information.

All things considered--a very useful little book; I'm satisfied with the purchase.
