Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There is no shortage of books on dinosaurs and it has become increasingly difficult to produce anything novel without departing too much from the scientific evidence. Walking with Dinosaurs is one of the rare gems.

The most spectacular aspect of the book is the images, which are basically stills from the accompanying television documentary series. By using state-of-the-art computer graphics and animation of models a new kind of "reality" is introduced. The dinosaurs are portrayed against real landscapes, which were specially photographed for the series. The combined effect is to produce a wonderful array of new images of dinosaurs and other contemporary animals from marine and flying reptiles to mammal ancestors.

Even die-hard dinophobes would have to admit that Tim Haines and the BBC team have produced something of a coup, which comes very close to their aim of making a film about dinosaurs as if they were living animals. All that is missing is David Attenborough lurking in the undergrowth.

The other novel aspect is that rather than trying to take a general swipe across all of dinoland, they sensibly focus on a limited number of scenes in time which the scientists know most about. So the story starts in New Mexico, as it was 220 million years ago (Late Triassic times), and focuses on the early days of dinosaur evolution. We are swept through four successive time frames before fetching up at the end of the dinosaur road with the aptly named Hell Creek in the western US, 65 million years ago.

Designed for dinofans of all ages, this spectacularly illustrated book is a significant addition to dinoliterature, offering a well balanced view of the "pros and cons" of the dinodebate today. -- Douglas Palmer --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Synopsis

Tells the thrilling history of dinosaurs from their first appearance in the middle of the Triassic period, to their sudden demise, 160 million years later, at the end of the Cretaceous era. With stunning visual images, which combine classic natural history techniques with state-of-the-art computer graphics and the latest research.

If you enjoyed the incredible television series of the same name, then you simply have to add this book to your library. Just for good measure, after watching the series and buying the book, I then bought the TV series on video! Of course a great deal of guesswork has gone into all this, because we can never know for sure what colour these creatures were or exactly what sounds they made, but the producers have done a great job working within the limits of the info available to them such an unimaginably long time after the event. The book is a feast of fascinating photo's and must make anybody wonder about these animals who ruled the world long before man. If this book doesn't make a dinofan out of you, nothing will!

One of the best books I have ever read about dinosaurs. The best way to enjoy it, is of course to read it as you see the stunning TV series (Video or DVD). But the book also can stand alone with it's authoritative text and superb illustrations.
As an introduction to dinosaur worlds, you can do no better. And if anyone is interested in finding more about those magnifiscent creatures, the "Walking with Dinosaurs - The Evidence" and "Walking with Dinosaurs - facts" are always there.

When I first got this book for Christmas I was over the moon. It was the best present I had recieved in ages. At the time I was finishing The Lord Of The Rings by JRR Tolkien. I intended to finish it before I started Walking With Dinosaurs but when I read just a paragraph I got hooked. It's beautiful pictures combine with first class up-to-date, informative text makes this now one of the most interesting books I own.
