Review

Nasmyth's excellent book.' - Sunday Telegraph

Product Description

Remarkably, Georgia - no larger than Switzerland - ranks in the world's top twelve countries for geographical diversity. It contains the heart of the Caucasus mountains - larger and more dramatic than the Alps - subtropical wetlands, a Black Sea coast, semi-desert, all peppered with ancient stone towers and an exceptional history. But this walker's paradise remains virtually undiscovered. Peter Nasmyth has now provided the first comprehensive walker's guide, including birds, flora and fauna, to Europe's most diverse landscape. The book contains clear directions, excellent maps, GPS references, local history/contacts and a superb selection of colour photographs.

First Sentence
One factor in Georgia's relative freedom from tourism is a change in reputation thirteen years ago - from earthly Soviet paradise to 'dangerous' - an unfortunate, if effective tactic in landscape preservation. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written and useful., 4 Jan 2010

This review is from: Walking in the Caucasus: Georgia (Paperback)
The one and only walking guide to Georgia, at least when I was there. Very informative and accurate, though the glaciers have receded far too much since it was written (clearly not the writer's fault!!).

My only fault with is is the Svaneti chapter, in which Nasmyth refuses to give GPS stats because he doesn't believe "you should be walking alone". Let me tell you, that's how it's going to pan out, and it would be a lot safer if he would just give the GPS positions. Of course, the area has gotten much safer since the book was written and the area around Mt Kazbek, etc., has gotten much LESS save, so your mileage may vary.

Surely a much better book COULD be written, but this one is perfectly adequate for the intermediate/low advanced hiker. Beginners, try this at home first. There are some serious hikes in here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book with lots of ideas, 22 Jun 2011

This review is from: Walking in the Caucasus: Georgia (Paperback)
Although I've not used the book yet it has wetted my appetite and made sure that I will try to get to some areas I may have missed before hand. Looks like a great little companion to have along on walks in a country with unreliable maps. Can't wait to get to Georgia and try it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the purpose, i.e. for walking, 8 Mar 2007
By Janis G - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Walking in the Caucasus: Georgia (Paperback)
This book tells you exactly what it says in the title. It is purely a walking guide, actually quite a good one. Includes maps and good descriptions of the routes and indicates in which seasons each route is available for walking.

Unfortunately, this book is not a general tourist guide at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, 2 May 2011
By Z. Kantor - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Walking in the Caucasus: Georgia (Paperback)
I must say I am disappointed. I was looking for a book to start planning a trek in the Caucasus and stumbled upon this book. It is basically a bunch of daily walks that don't add up for a multi-day hiking experience.

If you are looking for a book to add a day walk here and there this might be just what you were looking for.
