Review

'This Grace Jones lookalike with a degree in French is a splendid creation' Sunday Telegraph 'Jazz addicts have a treat in store with Rhode Island Red, a book so filled with affection for the form that Charlie Parker seems almost to be another character... It is refreshing to find a heroine who has both a rock-solid moral center and a sense of humor' Donna Leon

Product Description

An American love story cast in deepest noir. It?s the story of a black woman named Nettie who comes to New York to be a model but grows too big and ends up as a designer. Like Chester Himes? The End of a Primitive, Walking Bones is an American tragedy that unpicks the sexuality of racism and the strange contradictions of sexual power. Urban and precise yet oddly dreamlike, Walking Bones, like the blues, reflects big city life in the US today.

I cannot sit here and write a review that can explain this book. It confused the hell out of me. I got most of it, but I seriously would need to read it again to get the "Oh, I see!".

In a nutshell this is an psychological/romance story. It is short, so I got through it fairly quickly. The writing is not typical either, this author has her own quirks, very different, but nice to read something different. The Main characters of Nettie, Albert, and Rufus. We are talking obsession, sexual obsession here. There is no actual copulation between the two main characters, Nettie and Albert, but we find out that sex is at the forefront of this relationship.

Rufus, Netties gay friend, has taken care of Nettie for years, how he does this is mind boggling, and he has his own obsession with his friend. This obsession can only go one way. Nettie has no idea and her own demons we find out at the end of the book which make us understand why she does what she does with Albert. In the end it becomes tradgic and senseless, but the human psychi is anything but simple.
