This is an extremely well written guide to the Alps. The first few pages contain valuable information, especially for people unused to mountain walking. The individual walks are very clearly described and contain useful local information. It has obviously written by walkers, who appreciate how necessary it is to have timings, distances and total climbs listed, therefore enabling you to judge the grade of the walk. However, we found the grading system used in the book and the suggested timings of the walks to be appropriate. The choice of walks in the areas we visited were a good selection, which highlighted the different scenery and walking possibilities in each region. Inevitably some great walks have also been omitted, but if you only did the ones suggested in the book, you would have gained a good impression of the area, and would have enjoyed some lovely hiking. We were sorry that the Chamonix valley was not discussed. While the author's comments about other books adequately covering this region were valid, it would have been nice to have had the author's distinctive and informative style cover the walks, in what is a major Alpine region of France. Our only slight criticism is the annoying habit of not printing the maps with North to the top of the page. Although, this was probably a printing restriction, it meant you had to be careful when reading the maps in the book. Overall this is an excellent book, which is truly useful in helping you to decide where to go, and which walks to do when you get there.

I have not been through the whole book as yet. Maybe as it covers such a vast area is a bit brief in the walk description. But overall it gives a good overview and presentation of the area.

Exploring the wildest Alps 31 Aug 2008
By George Alderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
We just returned from our second hiking trip in the French Alps using this book, and we're already planning a third. This is the best guide we have found in English or French. The authors know their trails, and they found the wildest, most unspoiled parts of the Alps, which are protected in national and regional parks - the Vanoise range, the Ecrins, the Queyras, and the Mercantour. (The book does not cover Chamonix and the Mont Blanc range.) Our favorite wild hiking area is the valley of the Veneon (near Bourg-d'Oisans). We enjoyed the hikes there recommended in this book.
